Introducing Zune 2.5

Microsoft Zune familyMicrosoft is still trying to hammer away its digital media player, Zune, but the competition is tough since they are trying to compete with Apple’s iPod and iTunes. The latest update I heard from Microsoft about Zune was yesterday, on May 5, 2008, that they are not only adding new features and enhancements to the device itself, but also going to evolve and improve the Zune software, Zune Social and the Zune Marketplace. The main focus of this update is to extend the social network community that has been created around the device.

Brian Seitz, a Group Marketing Manager for Zune, states:

“Zune owners are pretty passionate, and they had a lot of great ideas for making the community more valuable to music fans. And I definitely fall into that category myself – the main reason we’re all here is we love the music,”

With Zune Social, users can interact in terms of music discovery, comments, playlist browsing, with the update to the table, additional capabilities includes the ability to send messages to friends, explore their music collections and even drag-and-drop Zune Cards.

The new Zune 2.5 software offers advanced integration with Zune Social. But this is not all. Microsoft has not resumed the spring update just for these two aspects. Using the Zune Cards, the Redmond company also worked to deliver a portable music exploration experience.

Brian Seitz also added

“For Zune Pass subscribers, dragging and dropping a friend’s Zune Card onto your Zune means that all of the music that friend has been listening to is automatically synced to your Zune, so you can listen to the full tracks when you’re out and about,”

So this means, these Zune Cards are going to be our musical passports :D There’s one more good news. Microsoft has partnered with COMEDY CENTRAL, FUNimation Entertainment, MTV, NBC Universal, Nickelodeon, Starz Media, Turner Broadcasting, Ultimate Fighting Championship and VH1 in order to offer TV shows via the Zune Marketplace.

I think Apple’s iPod and iTunes are going to face tough competition with Microsoft’s Zune and its ‘social-network’. What do you say guys? Would you still go for an iPod?  Or have planned to get a Zune?
