How to Install Third-Party Themes in Windows 7 with Universal Theme Patcher

Microsoft offer tons of Windows 7 themes and you can download and use those Windows themes for free. However, Microsoft doesn’t allow third-party themes to make major changes to your OS.

You can still manage to do so, by tweaking and patching some system files i.e uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, themeservice.dll. Universal Theme Patcher is a free utility which patches these 3 files so you can download custom Windows 7 themes and use them on your computer.

Universal Theme Patcher – Patch uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, themeservice.dll

Download Universal Theme Patcher for Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) from here to patch uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, themeservice.dll files which will allow you to install and use third-party Windows 7 themes.

Note: This utility requires administrative rights. Turn UAC off before using this.

Windows 8 is making waves these days on the Internet with new leaked content every few days. We have already seen a full leak of Windows 8 build 7850 ISO, but now some more feature details are also available.

Windows 8 aero auto-colourization feature were been talked about for a while, but now we finally have something to see with screenshots and how to enable the aurora effect with the auto-colourization feature in Windows 8 Aero theme.

What is Windows 8 Aero Auto-Colourization?

You must have noticed that after every wallpaper change in Windows 7, you manually had to change the the colour of Windows 8 Aero theme (taskbar, windows etc). Windows 8 Aero’s auto-colourization will automatically detect the colour of the wallpaper and change the colour of taskbar, start menu and explorer. It changes their aero glass colours.

How to Enable Windows 8 Aero Auto-Colourization?

It has been found that Windows 8 Build 7850 also has the auto-colorization feature, but has been disabled by default. You actually need a few missing files.

How to Change User Account Picture Tile in Windows 8

Windows 8 is going to feature Metro UI throughout the operating system. The first leaked Windows 8 (build 7850) doesn’t reveal much about that, but there are definitely some signs of the Metro UI showing up in future builds.

One such ‘sign’ can be found when changing your Windows 8 user account picture tile from under ‘My Look” settings. The description on that window says – “Choose from available tiles: The picture you choose will appear on your taskbar and represent you throughout Windows.” See the word, ’tiles’ there!

How to Change User Account Picture Tile

Follow the steps below to change your user account picture tile in Windows 8:

Click on your user account picture tile in the taskbar.
Select “My Look”.
This will actually take you directly to Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts > Your Look.
Browse for own picture for your user tile, or choose from the existing ones under “Default Pictures”.
Click OK. You new picture should be applied to the user tile in the taskbar!

Note: The above steps were performed on Windows 8 (Build 7850) Milestone 1.

How to Enable/Disable Hybrid Boot in Windows 8 for Faster Startup Time

Recently, another feature of Windows 8 was discovered called as “Hybrid Boot”. It allows you to reduce startup times after shutting down your computer.

The shutdown and startup times have significantly improved even in Windows 8 Milestone 1 (build 7850). If Hybrid Boot is enabled, restart behaviour of your computer remains un-affected.

How to Enable Hybrid Boot in Windows 8

Follow the simple steps below to enable or disable hybrid boot feature in Windows 8.

Open Control Panel.
Navigate to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
From the left pane, click on “Choose what the power button does”.
In there, click on “Change settings that are currently unavailable”.
Now at the bottom, you will be able to enable or disable hybrid boot.

Microsoft will make sure Windows 8 supports a range of other devices other than just tablets, PCs. Windows 8 installation will not just be limited to Hard Disks, but can now also be installed on USB drives. Widows 8 will allow you to install Windows on USB drive, bootable.

Windows 8 will have Portable Workspace, a new feature that allows users to install Windows 8 on USB drives and also run Windows 8 from USB drives.

“To create a Portable Workspace, you need access to Windows 8 Enterprise Edition installation files and a USB storage device with the following features: the device appears as fixed storage media [and] there is sufficient space for a full installation of Windows 8 Enterprise Edition.”

This feature will let Windows 8 install on a USB drive and will be available as a bootable, portable copy of Windows 8. It will have all the settings, software etc. that users would have installed.

Windows 8 is rumoured to have the new Metro interface, but it wasn’t confirmed until now when we actually have a video surfacing on the web of Windows 8 user logon screen that features the new Metro UI.

Windows 8 Build 7955 features the first Metro UI elements in the user logon screen of Windows 8. Microsoft did their best to keep the Windows 8 development tight, but oh well, it is still out on the web and Windows 8 Build 7850 is also available for download now.

Activate Windows 8 Build 7850 with KMS Activator

The first tool to activate Windows 8 and bypass Windows 8 activation has finally been released. We thought it would take some time for “crackers” and developers to come out with such tool, but oh well, KMS Activator is already available for download.

Here is a complete guide on how to activate Windows 8, remove Timebomb trial limit and bypass Windows 8 activation so that you can try out the first milestone of Windows 8 build 7850 for a longer period.

There are a number of tutorials and guides available for activation, without any Windows 8 activation keys, but I think, this is the easiest one of all.

How to Activate Windows 8 Build 7850 with KMS Activator

This tool is very simple. For activation, it uses WZT’s method of activating Windows (and Office) offline! And as for timebomb remover, this tool replaces Windows 8 tokens and store folders by Windows 7 ones.

Follow the instructions below to activate Windows 8:

Boot your Windows 8 in Safe Mode (hit F8 key few times just after BIOS disappears).
Run KMS Activator and click Remove Timebomb.
After it patches up, restart your computer!
Run KMS Activator again and now press the Activate button.
After it patches up and activates Windows 8, restart your computer.

That’s it! Your copy of Windows 8 build 7850 is now fully activated. Make sure you run this tool every 180 days to retain the activation.

Windows 8 System Reset Screenshot Leaked

A number of new features are going to be added in Windows 8, and out of all those, the one we have seen before has again leaked in a Windows 8 screenshot – system reset.

Windows 8 will be able to reset a system to its factory settings in just a few minutes. According to this new Windows 8 screenshot leak, the system reset button will be located near the system restore option. This latest leak comes from win7china.com.

Win7China also states that when you press the system reset button, it will remove all installed software from your computer and return the OS to default (stock) settings. You will be able to choose to keep your user account information and personal files.

Internet Explorer 10 Might Ship With Windows 8

Microsoft is planning to ship Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) with Windows 8? Well, it seems so. IE9 just released yesterday and the rumours of IE10 have already started surfacing that it might be released along with Windows 8 in 2012.

This new rumour comes in from a Chinese website Win7China – The same website that leaked the first Windows 8 screenshots.

According to them, IE10 is already in Windows 8 M3, but that is still unconfirmed. The arrival of IE10 with Windows 8 sounds fine as by the time Windows 8 will be released, IE9 would be an year old.

No leaked IE10 screenshots or other information for now, but I’m sure they would soon be available!

A user at DeviantArt created a set of wallpapers that is exactly the same as the wallpaper of Windows 8 M1 and M2.

This wallpaper pack comes in 10 colours and all have the same Windows 8 official wallpaper concept.

Windows 8 Aero Lite Buttons and Language Explorer

More and more leaks of Windows 8 have started showing up on the Internet. Just a couple of days ago we saw more leaked Windows 8 screenshots of the taskbar and Office 15 screenshots. Now we have some buttons of the new Windows 8 AeroLite theme!

First, the Russian hacker AngelWZR leaked info about the Metro UI in Windows 8 and now he has leaked some elements of it.

Other than this, he has also leaked a screenshot of the new Language Explorer in Windows 8. A number of changes could be seen in the screenshot below!

Microsoft Office 15 is the next major update to the office suite of applications from Microsoft.

A number of leaks have happened in the past few days. Two leaks of Windows 8 images and now Office 15 screenshots have leaked.

The new Microsoft Office 15 screenshots show an updated ribbon interface, but does not have the ‘Metro’ UI that everyone is talking about, plus it is expected that Microsoft will be using its Metro UI in all its products, including Windows 8.

Windows 8 Image Leak: Taskbar

A few days back we saw a windows 8 screenshot leak, and this time we have another one – a Windows 8 taskbar image.

This new image does not reveal anything new. Since Windows 8 reached Milestone 3, more beta testers have been added and a number of users of various forums are seem to be using it. That means? More leaks could be expected!

Windows 8 taskbar will have Windows Live ID signin and your profile photo in the corner. This screenshot is similar to the one we posted before.

I’m looking forward to a full Windows 8 Milestone 3 ISO leak now! ;)

Windows 8 Live ID Screenshot & More Features

Microsoft is busy with the next major operating system release – Windows 8 – which is to be out in 2012. Today, a Chinese site Win7China got hold some new information about what new features Microsoft will include in Windows 8.

Along with the new features, the site also included a Windows 8 screenshot of Windows Live ID login.

This is what was found about the factory restore feature in Windows 8.

The site states that Windows 8 will have a factory restore feature that will return the computer to its factory state in under 2 minutes and that the installation time of Windows 8 M3 took 8 minutes to install. This install time is approximately 2.5 times faster than Windows 7.

The factory restore feature will not require a disk to be inserted to accomplish this task and the required hard disk space to do this is said to be minimal.

Windows 8 App Store and many other features will also be included in the upcoming Windows 8.

As the release time gets near, more and more leaks and news will start surfacing over the internet. We’re looking forward to more!

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Released

Microsoft has finally released the Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Windows 7 SP1 is available for download via Windows Update, or you can grab the full update directly from Microsoft Download Center. The full release is almost 2GB in size.

Windows Phone 7 Jailbreak, Coming Soon!

Windows Phone 7 has just released and the developers are already working hard to jailbreak Windows Phone 7 and run unmanaged native code. Jailbreaking Windows Phone 7 is coming soon.

A user on XDA Developers was able to find out that accessing “Microsoft.Phone.InteropServices” DLL in WP7, it could give you access to native code and can side-load applications.

Chris Walshie created such an app using his developer certificate, which allowed him to side-load applications in Windows Phone 7 and gave the app full access to the native code and registry.

This progress shows that Windows Phone 7 jailbreak is not too far away and I’m pretty sure XDA Developers would soon find a way to get it done.

After the beta release of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 back in July, Microsoft has released the Windows 7 SP1 Release Candidate version and it is now available for download, plus also released Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RC.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 includes all the previous Microsoft updates for Windows 7. You can download it directly from the Microsoft website.

In order to download and install the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Release Candidate you must currently have a Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 already installed.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Release Candidate is available for installation in the same languages made available at original launch of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Leaked

Microsoft Windows 7 is one of the best operating system launched my Microsoft, especially after the failure of Windows Vista. Few days back, Microsoft announced that they will be releasing Windows 7 Service Pack 1 which will contain minor bug fixes and patches.

They also mentioned that the new service pack will support Dynamic Drive and RemoteFX feature.

There is good news for all the Windows 7 users. Windows 7 Service Pack 1 has been leaked on the torrents and can be downloaded by anyone who wants to try Windows 7 Services Pack 1. Some screenshots have been posted as well showing the new Windows 7 Service pack 1.

However, itâ€™s not the official release so think twice before you install it as it might be potentially dangerous. There is no news about the official release of service pack 1 till now.

Windows Live Messenger 2010 Leaked

Windows Live Messenger 2010 is a part of the Windows Live Essentials 4 that we will be seeing soon by Microsoft. This is something all Windows users look forward to every year.

Windows Live Essentials 4 is still under private beta testing, but it has now leaked over the web and available for download.

This leaked build is only for a few users allowed to beta test the apps, but a patch has been created which would allow you to atleast try out the next Windows Live messenger 2010.

This is still an early release and many features may differ as the final version approaches, but the main new feature in this release is the social and expanded contacts view.

Seesmic for Windows Phone was just announced at the MIX 2010 conference.

After Seesmic for Android and Seesmic for BlackBerry, they have now introduced, Seesmic for Windows Phone at the MIX10 conference which is being held in Las Vegas.

Seesmic for Windows Phone is still in its early development stages, and by the time first Windows Phone 7 devices hit the market, they would be fully utilizing the Windows Phone’s OS rich user experience and full integration of Bing maps and its geo-location features.

More features and plugins will be created when they are made available.

At MIX10, along with the announcement for Seesmic for Windows phone, they also announced Seesmic Desktop, which is a Silverlight-based Twitter client for Windows and Mac.

One of the product is the all new Silverlight-powered Seesmic Desktop Platform. It’s a development platform for Silverlight developers that want to work on the development of Seesmic Desktop Platform with cool new plugins and addons.

Seesmic Desktop Platform allows you to integrate Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts and in terms if design is quite similar to the Sessmic for Windows app.

Other features in the Seesmic Desktop includes animated transitions in settings and personalization of background.

One of the plugins that went on the live demo is the Bing mapping control plugin that will show location of users using geo-location enabled Twitter clients.

Seesmic Desktop will work under both, Windows and Mac.

Microsoft Offering Alternative Browsers to Windows 7 Users

Now this is something really very surprising! Microsoft is offering other “alternative” web browsers to its users in Europe.

In the latest Windows Update, Microsoft prompts users of Internet Explorer using Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 to make an “important choice” of choosing their web browser. The move is part of a settlement with the European Commission.

This update will be delivered to you via Automatic Updates, or if you have that disabled, you can get it from the Windows Update website. It doesn’t alter anything in your system, other than it unpins IE from your taskbar and asks you what browser you want to use.

The list of web browsers being offered by Microsoft are:

Avant
Chrome
Firefox
Flock
Green Browser
Internet Explorer
K-meleon
Maxthon
Opera
Safari
Sleipnir
Slim

Remember, this is only for users who use Internet Explorer as their default browser. Windows users who already use other web browsers i.e. Firefox, Opera etc will not be prompted to choose.

One thing that annoys me is that when going through Windows Explorer, it doesn’t show the folder size in the folder size column like it shows for files.

Folder Size for Windows is a free addon for Windows XP/Vista that adds a new column to the Windows Explorer details view to displays the sizes of files and folders.

It has a service that scans your hard disk in the background and caches the results.

Useful? Yes it is! Now you won’t have to right-click and go into the Properties of a folder just to see its size. Nothing much to explain in here. If you too want to have folder sizes displayed in Windows Explorer, download this addon right away!

Windows 7 was launched on October 22nd, and is now available at all retail stores near you.

In case you need to change your Windows 7 product key, there are two methods to do so. You can do it from System Properties or from DOS using the commands.

How to Change Windows 7 Product Key

To change Windows 7 product key, follow the simple steps below:

1. Right-click on the Computer desktop shortcut and go to Properties.

2. At the bottom of the window, click on Change Product key.

3. Enter your product key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX and press Enter.

4. Your new product key will now be activated.

5. That’s it! Your Windows 7 product key is now changed.

How to Change Windows 7 Product Key from DOS

1. Click on Start (the Orb) and type ‘cmd’ in the search box.

2. This will open Command Prompt, or you can add Command Prompt in your right-click menu.

3. Now type the following in Command Prompt and press Enter.
slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Note: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX should be your product key.

4. Once done, type slmgr.vbs -ato to activate your Windows 7.

Windows 7, the latest OS from Microsoft, is releasing in less than a week on October 22nd. We all know hosts for Windows 7 launch parties have a got a free licensed copy of Windows 7. But that’s not all, the attendees aren’t let out.

Increase Volume in Windows 7

This was a problem with Windows Vista, and it’s still there in the next version of Windows OS releasing in less than a week, Windows 7! Yes, I’m talking about the low volume problem in Windows.

The problem is, that even though my both, the volume mixer and my application’s volume is set to maximum levels, it is still not loud enough as it was in Windows XP.

How to Increase Volume in Windows 7

I tried updating my sound card drivers, but that didn’t worked either. Then after a little tweaking in Sounds option in Windows, I finally found a temporary fix to this low volume problem.

1. Go to Control Panel and open Sounds.

2. Click on Properties and open the Enhancements tab.

3. Now check the Loudness Equalization option and press OK.

You should now notice a considerable increase in the volume.

Download the Bing OpenSearch description document.
Double-click the downloaded document. This will automatically add the Bing “Search Connectorâ€ on your machine.
From Windows Explorer use the Search Box, type the terms for which you want to search and get the power of Bing into Windows.

The new Ringtone Editor, which is a part of Device Stage, let’s you can make ringtones from songs and sound files already on your PC, or you can create something with your own recordings.

It also gives you some options like fading in and out of the sound. To use Ringtone Editor with your phone, it should be compatible with Device Stage. If supported, you can directly preview a ringtone, save it directly to the phone, set it as your primary ring, or assign it to one or more of your contacts.

Windows Live provides users with a portal of services like Calendar, Space, Messenger, Photo Gallery, Writer etc. Windows Live Calendar lets you store reminders, birthdays, meetings etc and is a full featured online calendar.

DirectX 11 Comes to Vista SP2

Microsoft is still trying to save its all-time failed OS, Windows Vista, and this time Microsot is beginning to backport Windows 7 features to Windows Vista.

The first phase of this process will upgrade Vista’s graphics technology “DirectX 10″ to Windows 7′s DirectX 11.

Vista SP2 users will be getting the latest iteration of the DirectX platform from Windows 7, which Microsoft has made available for download. It has been been made available via the Platform Update for Windows Vista Beta. This upgrade is only for users running Windows Vista Service Pack 2. SP1 or RTM users won’t be able to download it.

Platform Update for Windows Vista will be available via Windows Update and will be a “recommended” install. It is expected to launch somewhere in October.

August 20, Last Day to get Windows 7 RC

A quick reminder for everyone who is still thinkingÂ whether to try the upcoming Microsoft OS, Windows 7, or not that today is the last day to grab a copy of the Release Candidate version of Windows 7.

The official test release, Windows 7 RC, from Microsoft is currently available for download. But today, on August 20, the download page will be taken off and then you will have to wait till the final release.

Windows 7 Final is suppose to release on October 22nd, but here’s the catch why you should get the RC first. The final release will just be a 30-day trial, but the Release Candidate version will work till June 1st 2010. RC will give you more time to play around with Windows 7.

So, if you still haven’t tried it, grab a copy now! You can download both, 32-bit and 64-bit versions from Microsoft. But remember, today is the last day!

Google Chrome OS Transformation Pack

Google Chrome OS has been making quite a hype since it’s announcement last month. Several websites have posted screenshots claiming them to be the leaked screenshots of Chrome OS, but most of them have been verified as fake.

While Google is getting us excited before the actual release, a designer at DeviantART has come up with a Chrome OS Transformation Pack that could transform your Windows XP with the Chrome OS looks.

There are no official screenshots or images of the OS yet, but this transformation pack is just what the designer visualizes Chrome OS will be like.
