You don’t have to fuss over desktop apps in search for the best one. Simple upload your files at MergePDF, and it will generate the merged PDF file for you to download.

However, there are some limitations at MergePDF.

• Maximum number of input files is 10
• Individual file size limit is 5 MB
• All uploaded files are removed after the merge process has finished.

Startup Control Panel is a nifty config utility that allows you to easily configure what programs you want to run at startup, what not. This little tool is really simple to use, and is a very useful, handy tool for computer administrators.

Opera has this feature since a long time, but Firefox never had one. But today, while going through a forums, I found this cool Firefox addon called, FireTorrent, thanks to which I’m no more jealous of Opera users.

This addon lets you download BitTorrent files directly from Firefox with just a single-click. That means you are no longer restricted to have a BitTorrent client first before you can download a torrent.

To start downloading a torrent, all you have to do is click a torrent link, and it will automatically start downloading in Firefox’s Download Manager just like normal files. Currently, this addon is in its early stages and have capped uploading at 15kb/s. Even the preferences panel has been disabled, but will be enabled in the next version.

This addon works with Firefox 3.0 or higher, running on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Recently, while browsing an underground discussion board, I came across an excellent tool to download files off RapidShare. It has nothing special, other than free users can add multiple links in a queue and download in a fully automated way.

Raptor is a download manager for RapidShare, which lets you add multiple download links in queue and downloads them one by one without having you to start each download yourself.

It’s a pretty simple application with a clean interface and everytime you add download links, it will always ask where you want them to save. There is not much to explain about this application except that it’s in Russian language by default. You can easily change it as shown in the screenshot below.

It is a freeware and works on both Windows XP and Vista. But you need to have .NET Framework 2.0 or higher installed.

Even though Facebook lets us upload photos through it’s own Java-based or simple uploader, I had to find a desktop solution because my Firefox kept crashing in the middle of upload process.

A little Googling got me to Bloom, a desktop Facebook photo uploader. It is a very simple, easy-to-use app that let’s you upload photos to your Facebook account directly from desktop. First you are asked to login into Bloom through Facebook, then you have to allow Bloom to access your Facebook account. The interface is very clean with just four buttons on the top that lets you create and upload albums, browse your own albums, friends albums or photos you are tagged in.

Upload process is pretty easy. Simply drag and drop the photos that you want to upload in the main window, enter album name, location and description (if it’s a new album) and enter captions for your photos (optional). Now hit the “Upload Photo” button and wait till they all get uploaded.

As soon as the uploading finishes, that uploaded album’s page will be opened in your browser. Bloom also let’s you browse through your friends photos.

In my case where I had to upload 350+ photos, Bloom went very well for me!

SideSlide is an interesting program that has the potential to significantly reduce your desktop clutter and be an invaluable organizational tool.

The name SidesSde might be a bit misleading. The program does not actually slide your desktop, or lengthen it in any way. SideSlide combines a number of functions into a desktop-accessible interface: a launcher (for programs, folders, files. and bookmarks), a desktop notes and reminders program, and an RSS reader, all of which objects embedded in a free-form environment that is dockable off the side of your screen. It’s a highly configurable Desktop Extension that adds room to your desktop by providing a neat, tidy way to slide your shortcuts to the side, and maintaining everything in one folder without the usual clutter.

After installing this neat little program, you’ll want to designate a place on your screen for it. To do this, click on the paper airplane symbol in your taskbar, then hold and drag it into position.

Once you move the cursor from the SideSlide box it will disappear into the side, top, or bottom of your screen (depending on where you’ve placed it). To recall the application, simply move the cursor to the edge of the screen where you positioned the app, and presto! You can resize it just as you would other window screens. That’s it!

Content can be added in many different ways. RSS feeds, notes, URLs, system commands, file or folder shortcuts can be added directly onto the workspace. URLs, system commands, file and directory shortcuts can also be collected in separate ‘containers’. Folder containers can display the contents of a specific folder and you can open files or subfolders right from that container. All you need to do is drag and drop objects into SideSlide itself, or to a ’containter’ that you can create within it.  For example, if you are working on a  project you could create a container with the appropriate name, then drag all of it’s related files, URLs and note to it, and even include bookmarks and tags.  Now it’s all in one convenient place; easy to find, and easy to recall.

SideSlide also has a reminder feature where you can create basic reminders that will appear as visible objects in SideSlide. These will flash with a chime near the system tray when due, with the option to either “snooze” or dismiss it.  The RSS works, but lacking in comparison to other programs.

SideSlide may not be for everyone, but I found it to be a useful, unobtrusive tool that has added to my computing experience. To find out more, and to see an example of how it works, check out SideSlide tour available on its homepage

Meanwhile, I’ve come across another interesting freeware that does almost the same as Messenger Plus! Live.

But this cache is not visible by default, and you cannot see what items are stored in it. This problem can be solved with a freeware that lets you browse through your Opera browser cache.

Opera Cache Viewer displays the list of all files stored in Opera’s cache (fetches them from the cache folder). It also shows when it was last accessed, modified and its file size. You can also save any files that you missed while browsing that website.

It is a Windows-only application and works with all versions of Windows supporting 9 languages.

They have rolled out a new tool that can help you reduce and optimize the size of images used on your blog/website.

Smush It is a service that goes beyond the limitations of Photoshop, Fireworks & Co. It uses image format specific non-lossy image optimization tools to squeeze the last bytes out of your images – without changing their look or visual quality.

According to them, lots of more optimizations could be done, even after using good image editing tools. So Smush It comes out with the objective of doing it online and in a much better way.

You can add images (which are to be optimized) by three methods:

• Upload a bunch of pictures from your browser
• Provide them with a list of image URLs
• Install a Firefox Extension to optimize the images found on any web page

After the optimization completes, a ZIP archive with optimized images in it will be generated for you to download.

This tool also looks useful to me and I’ll be definitely using it in future. I recommend this to all webmasters.

If you have good habit of searching files and run instead of getting all through your hard disk then nDroid is the way to go. nDroid a.k.a 320mph is an ultra fast anything launcher that can open documents, play songs, open browser bookmarks, lookup web references, find torrents, do online searches and a lot more than you expect.

As soon as you type the file name, it starts searching for it in real-time. Sounds simple? Yeh, but nDroid is a little more than just a file searcher because it has option to do a lot more things with the help of plugins and vast configurable options.

You don’t have to install nDroid. It comes as a ZIP archive and you just have to run the EXE file. nDroid will quietly sit into your taskbar. On first run you have to make a Path List by giving different locations of your hard disk where you want nDroid to gain access for fast searching (I gave all my hard disk access to nDroid for better file searching). When you are done giving paths, close the window. Now press Ctrl + Alt + Z and start searching files Ultra Fast.

nDroid comes with a couple of options to configure for better experience such as tweaking shortcuts to suit your needs. Plugin support makes it unique than any other file launcher. You can open Run Commands directly like if you type in ‘cmd’ and press Ctrl + Enter command prompt will open. You can also ‘Enqueue files in Winamp’ with keyboard shortcuts!

• Indexes your start menu, desktop, documents and favorite websites, and can launch all these with just a few keystrokes.
• Can also serve as the Start Menu ‘Run’ option
• Though its interface is sleek, it doesn’t expend system resources on looking good. Its purpose is to find what you’re looking for, with minimal effort and do it fast. And that’s what it does.
• Though the memory used by nDroid is minimal, it can be used in Not-Always-Running mode. Here its launched by hotkey as needed, and exits right after launching an app.
• Calculator : Type a ‘?’ followed by a mathematical expression and nDroid calculates the answer.
• It supports plugins to extend its action and search capabilities.

I’ll leave the rest for you all to explore and try. It was quite confusing for me at first, but once started using it I found it very useful.
