Those of you trying to use Firefox 7.0a1 will be facing an issue that none of your Firefox addons would be working in this browser due to compatibility issues and you will have to hack your way through so that Firefox 7.0 doesn’t check for extension updates and disables them.

How to Disable Addon Compatibility Check in Firefox 7.0a1 Nightly Build

Just follow the steps below to disable addon compatibly check in the latest Firefox 7.0:

1. Open a new tab.
2. Type about:config in the address bar.
3. Right click anywhere on the page and click on Boolean under New.
4. Enter this as the preference name: extensions.checkCompatibility.nightly
5. Click OK.
6. Choose false and then click OK again.
7. Restart your browser and all your add-ons should be runnable again.

That’s it! Your previous extensions and addons should now work perfectly fine in Firefox 7.0 Alpha 1, nightly build!

Firefox 5 is now available for download. We talked about the rapid fast development channel of Firefox, knows as Firefox Aurora – which now looks into action as the Firefox 5.0 is now already available for download after five weeks of testing on the Aurora channel and then another few weeks in five beta releases.

Looks like, soon after this we are about to see the Firefox 6 to hop on the Aurora channel and be ready for the final release soon. The first ‘nightly’ builds of Firefox 6 are already available for download since April.

We are still exploring for new features and changes in the all new Firefox 5.0. We’ll update as soon as we find something new and interesting in the latest release.

After the minor Firefox 4.0.1 update, we wrote about Firefox 5.0 Alpha 2, and now – Firefox 6.0 Alpha 1. The first alpha version is now available and at least we don’t find any major changes in it so far. May be in the next few releases.

Firefox development sure seems on steroids these days, specially after how much time they took with the Firefox 4 development.

To come to think of it, Mozilla just released the final version of Firefox 4, plans to release Firefox 5 in June, and now here they are already with plans for the Firefox 6.

Mozilla’s latest goal is to change the entire UI of the download manager. Mozilla plans to change the UI of all the objects that load in new windows (download manager, preferences, bookmarks etc) and fit them in new tabs. Firefox 4 has already done that with the addons manager.

Chrome 12 is no different. It already opens Booksmarks, History, Preferences, Download Manager etc. in different tabs, instead of loading in another window.

According to Mozilla, this new UI will provide “better consistency within Firefox and a better experience for users.”

MX3 is a Firefox 4 theme, based on Maxthon 3. A very clean and light UI. I’m actually liking my Firefox a lot more with this theme than the default one.

It seems that Mozilla was right about speeding up their development cycle after the release of Firefox 4.0 and have confirmed plans to release Mozilla Firefox 5.0 in June.

According to Mozilla’s Rob Sayre, Firefox might follow the development of Chrome and split Firefox into four different channels: nightly, experimental, beta and final. New features will show up in the nightly builds, and will roll out to experimental and beta builds.

Firefox 4 for mobile is built on the same technology as the Firefox 4 for desktop and has been optimized for a mobile-browsing experience. It features some of our favourite desktop Firefox 4 features in the mobile app i.e. Firefox Sync, Add-ons and the Awesome Bar.

We have been following the development of Firefox 4 for Mobile (aka Fennec) from its early alpha releases and we must say, Firefox 4 beta is a big improvement in the browser stability and speed after Fennec for Android Pre-Alpha release. Just a week ago, Firefox announced that Fennec will be named Firefox for Mobile.

Firefox 4 for Android has the same UI since day one, but speed and stability is where it has improved a lot. It used to take almost a minute to get the browser working smooth after its initialize launch on the Nexus One, but now the app flies on both, the Nexus One and the Samsung Galaxy S.

If pull the screen towards right, on the left side of the browser you will see all your opened tabs and from there you can also open new ones. Similarly, on the right side of the browser, you have buttons to bookmark the website, go back or forward buttons as well. And at the bottom, you will see a Preferences button that brings up the Preferences page to configure the app as we want.

Firefox addons is the same feature why most of us love Firefox experience on desktop where we can customize the browser with our favourite addons. You can download new ones, or enable/disable existing addons from the Add-ons page.

When surfing websites, if you want to save an image, just like other browsers, simply long-press the image and you will see the options for that image.

Firefox 4 for Android also features the Awesome Bar that was first introduced in Firefox 3.0. To open a previously opened website or a bookmark, simply type in the words and you will be shown all the matching website URLs below.

Searching for a product, music or anything else on Twitter, Amazon, Google or Wikipedia is also a piece of cake now. Just type in your search query and select the service that you want Firefox 4 for Android to search in.

If you like a page and would like to share it with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader or through email, just tap on the favicon of that website and you will be given options on how to share that page.

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this browser to run on your Android phone other than that you need a fast and one of the new Android devices to run Firefox 4 for Android. Supported and tested devices include: HTC Desire, Nexus One, HTC Evo, Motorola Droid 2, Samsung Galaxy S I9000.

Even though it’s not enabled by default, you can still enable it manually with the help of the instructions given at the Firefox Wiki.

How to Enable D2D in Firefox 4

Follow the instructions below to enable D2D support in Firefox 4:

1. Enter ‘about:config’
2. Click through the warning, if necessary
3. Enter gfx.font in the ‘Filter’ box
4. Double-click on ‘gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled’ to set it to true
5. Below this, right click and select New > Integer to add a pref setting
6. Enter ‘mozilla.widget.render-mode’ for the preference name, 6 for the value
7. Restart

Firefox 4 beta 4 will be released on Monday which will have support for hardware-accelerated graphics!

Firefox 4 beta 4 will be released with two new features: hardware-accelerated graphics for Windows users and tab sets.

Hardware-accelerated graphics with Direct2D will not be enabled by default as their code is not that ready yet. D2D will make Firefox faster by helping in displaying texts and images.

Tab sets (aka tab candy) will allow users to group their tabs together into sets, such as ‘Work’, ‘Home’ etc.

Mozilla will release Firefox 4 beta 5 probably next month, which will be the last beta release before RC is released.

Since it’s a 10.2MB installation and requires atleast an Android 2.0 device with OpenGL support, I tried it on my Nexus One. The browser is pretty slow at the moment, but like the developer said, “it’s even more of a pre-nightly build (even earlier than pre-alpha)”. It’s usable though.

It has been a long time since Firefox has been talking about Fennec for Android and promised with an alpha release soon. They kept their promise, and the first alpha release is out for public download.

I have tried it on my Nexus One and it seriously has the best rendering of webpages among other Android browsers. Why and how? I’ll get on to this in another blog post. It has many bugs and glitches, but it performs the basic functions well, including installation and adding of Firefox Mobile addons. I even tweeted using the TwitterBar addon for Fennec here.

Some points to keep in mind, taken from the developer’s blog.

• We’ve only really tested this on the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One.
• It will likely not eat your phone, but bugs might cause your phone to stop responding, requiring a reboot.
• Memory usage of this build isn’t great — in many ways it’s a debug build, and we haven’t really done a lot of optimization yet.  This could cause some problems with large pages, especially on low memory devices like the Droid.
• You’ll see the app exit and relaunch on first start, as well as on add-on installs; this is a quirk of our install process, and we’re working to get rid of it.
• You can’t open links from other apps using Fennec; we should have this for the next build.
• This build requires Android 2.0 or above, and likely an OpenGL ES 2.0 capable device.
• Edit: This build must be installed to internal memory, not to a SD card.

A developer at Android forums managed to grab the dump from Mozilla Wiki and compile it in to an app that he tried and tested on his Motorola Droid.

I tried to make it work on my Nexus One, but it didn’t work at all. Next I’ll be trying it on my HTC Hero, but I doubt it will work on that too as it is on Android 1.5 – may be I’ll have to flash an Android 2.0 ROM on it. Get Fennec now!

Firefox for Android alpha version is being expected in February as the development work on it started back in December 2009. This news was posted on the German Firefox community site.

It is not sure what features the Firefox for Android will have, but it seems it will be a very basic app to display web pages.

A look at the Firefox Android wiki pages hints that the Firefox for Android will run on Android devices running on Android 1.6 or higher. It won’t work on Android 1.5 devices like the HTC Hero, HCT Droid Eris etc.

This latest Firefox release brings in lots of new features and updates. It was downloaded over 4.5 million times on the first day and  has been downloaded 17 million times in its first week.

In the early Firefox 3.6 builds, a new page scrolling was implemented which was later turned off due to some compatibility issues. That feature is still better for many who find the current page scrolling slow in Firefox 3.6.

How to Accelerate Page Scrolling in Firefox 3.6

To enable this, follow the simple steps given below:

1. Go to about:config by typing it in the address box.
2. Now search for mousewheel.acceleration.start using the filter box and set it to the number of successive mouse scrolls that will trigger acceleration. (Recommended: 3)
3. Then in mousewheel.acceleration.factor change its value to how many times faster you want to scroll. (Recommended: 5)

That’s it! Your page scrolling with the mouse wheel in Firefox 3.6 should be a lot better now. You can play with the number of values and see what works best for you.

Well, since that was a paid app and people mostly prefer free tools and applications, I’ve found a free method to backup your Facebook profile.

ArchiveFacebook is a free tool that allows you to save content from your Facebook account directly to your hard drive. Archive your photos, messages, activity stream, friends list, notes, events and groups.

It is a Firefox extension, which helps you to save web pages from Facebook and easily manage them. Save content from Facebook directly to your hard drive and view them exactly the same way you currently view them on Facebook.

The addon is still in experimental stage, so you will need to create an account at the Firefox addon website.

Just like there was a new interface in Firefox 3, the FF team is again working on a new and much-improved interface for Firefox 4.

Two mockup designs have been released on the Mozilla Wiki to gather user-feedback and improve their designs further. These two mockups show two versions, tabs on top and tabs on bottom on Windows Vista default theme.

Tabs on Top

A bookmarks menu has been added next to the address bar, also known as the Awesome Bar.

Positives:

• Save Vertical Space
• Efficiency/Remove Visual Complexity – Right now the tabs have to be connected to something. So we are adding an extra visual element for them to connect to.
• Shorter Mouse Distance to Page Controls

Negatives:

• Breaks Consistency/Familiarity – Moving things confuses existing users.
• Title is MIA – With the space removed from the titlebar you only get the truncated version in the tab.
• Longer Mouse Distance to Tabs – Takes longer to mouse to a tab.
• Lost Space – Sandwiched in between the application icon and the window widgets you lose some space.
• Chrome-ish – Looks more like Google Chrome, the first browser with tabs on top.

Well, not to worry anymore. Enters FacePAD, a firefox entension that lets you download Facebook albums in just a single click!

This is a very simple plugin which requires just a click to download albums. Simply right-click the View Album link, and from the menu, select Download Album with FacePAD. Then a Javascript pop-up will appear telling you to wait a moment while it initiates the download process. Press OK and the photos will be downloaded.

These downloaded albums will be saved in your default Firefox download directory.

I also mentioned about a plugin called Tab Scope. This Firefox entension can show a popup on tabs and enables you to preview and navigate tab contents through that popup.

Basically it shows a preview of what is opened in a tab. It’s major features that I would like to quote here are:

• Navigate (Back/Forward/Reload/Stop) through popup

To get a direct link for any image in Google Image Search, you have to first click the image and get the direct link from the website page where that image belongs to. But thanks to a Greasemonkey script, getting a direct link is much easier now.

Google Direct Image Links is a Greasemonkey script that adds a link to the direct URL of the image above every search result in Google Image Search.

This is a very useful script for people (like me) who use Google Image Search very often. No need to open the image page first just to get the direct link. You can copy it directly from the results page.

Similarly, if you want to view or save the original Flickr image, you have to go all the way through the photo page and select Original from the sizes available.

Flickr Original is a Firefox extension that lets you directly download or view the original Flickr image. You just have to right click on the image, and it will show you the option to download or view it.

Opera has this feature since a long time, but Firefox never had one. But today, while going through a forums, I found this cool Firefox addon called, FireTorrent, thanks to which I’m no more jealous of Opera users.

This addon lets you download BitTorrent files directly from Firefox with just a single-click. That means you are no longer restricted to have a BitTorrent client first before you can download a torrent.

To start downloading a torrent, all you have to do is click a torrent link, and it will automatically start downloading in Firefox’s Download Manager just like normal files. Currently, this addon is in its early stages and have capped uploading at 15kb/s. Even the preferences panel has been disabled, but will be enabled in the next version.

This addon works with Firefox 3.0 or higher, running on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Here’s a simple trick by which you can duplicate an already opened tab in Firefox. I still don’t get its use, but Firefox has this ‘feature’ in it.

Duplicating tabs in Firefox is very easy, in fact its a piece of cake! Simply hold down Ctrl key, and drag the tab that you want to be duplicated. If you didn’t get it, see the screenshot below.
