Microsoft has just bought Skype for a whopping $8.5 billion! This is not just based on rumours. WSJ and AllThingsD have confirmed that the acquisition deal has been made, and official announcement will follow tomorrow morning.

Talks to buy Skype has been rumoured a number of times,  but this time it is confirmed that Microsoft has bought Skype. Facebook was also in line to get Skype, but Microsoft got away with the Skype, thanks to such a high bid.

Now what for Skype? From what we see, Skype will be integrated into Windows Live Messenger and soon we would be able to voice and video chat between friends on Skype and Windows Live Messenger – just like chat is possible with Yahoo! Messenger friends.

A number of leaks have happened in the past few days. Two leaks of Windows 8 images and now Office 15 screenshots have leaked.

The new Microsoft Office 15 screenshots show an updated ribbon interface, but does not have the ‘Metro’ UI that everyone is talking about, plus it is expected that Microsoft will be using its Metro UI in all its products, including Windows 8.

Along with the new features, the site also included a Windows 8 screenshot of Windows Live ID login.

This is what was found about the factory restore feature in Windows 8.

The site states that Windows 8 will have a factory restore feature that will return the computer to its factory state in under 2 minutes and that the installation time of Windows 8 M3 took 8 minutes to install. This install time is approximately 2.5 times faster than Windows 7.

The factory restore feature will not require a disk to be inserted to accomplish this task and the required hard disk space to do this is said to be minimal.

Windows 8 App Store and many other features will also be included in the upcoming Windows 8.

As the release time gets near, more and more leaks and news will start surfacing over the internet. We’re looking forward to more!

He also talked about the Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Phone 7 that is supposed to release with a WP7 update codenamed “Mango’, and will be available later this year.

IE9 is fast, much more secure and with hardware-acceleration is currently the most stable browser available. Internet Explorer 9 release date is expected to be March 14, at South by southwest SXSW) music and film festival in Austin. A special launch party will also be held for the Internet Explorer 9 launch along with a press event.

A user on XDA Developers was able to find out that accessing “Microsoft.Phone.InteropServices” DLL in WP7, it could give you access to native code and can side-load applications.

Chris Walshie created such an app using his developer certificate, which allowed him to side-load applications in Windows Phone 7 and gave the app full access to the native code and registry.

This progress shows that Windows Phone 7 jailbreak is not too far away and I’m pretty sure XDA Developers would soon find a way to get it done.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, took the stage and explained how Windows Phone 7 will be bringing a change in the mobile industry and some features of the OS. According to him, the OS will be focusing on two points: wonderfully delightful, and wonderfully mine.

“When you first get the phone, the stuff that’s more obvious makes you smile,” says Andy Lees, Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business president.

The phone delivers a new user experience by integrating the things users really want to do, creating a balance between getting work done and having fun.

Microsoft also unveiled about 10 mobile phones featuring Windows Phone 7 that will be launched in the European market on Oct 21, and in U.S. market on Nov. 8.

I haven’t much played with the browser yet, but from my first impressions, it is too buggy for a beta release. If you try to load this website, the Facebook widget in the sidebar won’t even load.

IE9 is definitely fast, but I hope the Internet Explorer team really fixes all the bugs and glitches which are available in the first beta release.

But it appears as if Microsoft Russia was in a hurry and they leaked a screenshot showing the upcoming IE9 interface. You must be thinking whether the screenshot is legit or not. Well, Neowin reported that the screenshot leaked is legit as confirmed by one of their sources in Microsoft.

The Office for Home and Student will include Word, PowerPoint, Excel and IM apps costing customers $119 for one desktop and $149 for three Macs. Similarly, the Office 2011 for Home and Business will include Word, PowerPoint, Excel, IM and Microsoft Outlook as the e-mail client and will cost $199 per license and $279 for installation on two machines. An academic edition for school, college and university students and faculty will also be available for $99. These prices are cheap when compared to previous editions of Office for Mac. The Office 2008 for Business users was tagged in at a hefty $399 for two computers and the Home version also was considerably expensive.

In addition to having a new reduced price tag, Office 2011 will also be shipping in two more languages, Polish and Russian. Also, Office 2011 for Mac will be shipping to more than 100 countries worldwide when Microsoft launches it in October 2010.

Microsoft has taken key decisions with Office 2011 for Mac in order to ensure better cross platform compatibility, reliability, security and feature richness to ensure they can compete well in the office suite market against competitors like iWork and OpenOffice.

Greg Sullivan, senior product manager for Microsoft, while talking to online weblog Pocket-Lint stated that smartphones from Dell, Asus, LG, HTC, and Samsung will be coming out with Windows Mobile 7 when it is launched later this year. Dell would be launching its Windows Mobile 7 based device, Dell Lightning. Along with that, Mr. Sillivan also hinted that LG will also be releasing a renamed Panther running on Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system. With Samsung and HTC also confirm launching smartphones, things are look steady for Windows Mobile 7. Furthermore, the product manager of Microsoft also stressed that Microsoft will not be limiting its new operating system to just a few carriers in the US and the UK. “We want as many people as possible to be able to get it”, Sullivan told Pocket-lint.

He also said that Microsoft will be providing features which are the best of the best with Windows Mobile 7. “We will offer the best aspects of Android and the best of the iPhone, giving users the flexibility of different form factors, but with the rigidity of apps that are guaranteed to work on every device that is out there. By the time we will launch, we won’t have to worry about stealing customers from other operating systems, there will a new wave of smartphone users to embrace for us to still be successful”.

But today, Microsoft finally unveiled two smartphones known as Kin One and Kin Two.

The two phones will have a touch screen display and will be exclusively sold by Verizon Wireless in the US and made by Sharp Corp. The new Kin phones come with heavy social bookmarking features especially designed for those who use social networking lovers.

Music player in the Kin phones is based on Zune’s software which will also be used in the upcoming Windows Phone 7 based smartphones. Other than that, the phones will have Microsoft homescreen or they call it “Loop” which will be the user’s social networking feeds. The phones are equipped with many exciting features such as multiple finger gestures, the same as multi-touch in Apple iPhone. Both phones have QWERTY keyboards, Wi-Fi and cameras which can take high resolution pictures. It has been revealed that Kin One will have a 5mp camera while Kin Two is equipped with a 8mp camera. Surprisingly, the phones do not have any memory card slot. It uploads the data to Kin online storage service in order to save space.

Right now, there is no news about the pricing of the phones but from what we know so far, it will be cheap and not as expensive as other smartphones that are already in the market. Let’s see what Verizon and Microsoft has planned about the pricing of the smartphones.

There is good news for all the Windows 7 users. Windows 7 Service Pack 1 has been leaked on the torrents and can be downloaded by anyone who wants to try Windows 7 Services Pack 1. Some screenshots have been posted as well showing the new Windows 7 Service pack 1.

However, it’s not the official release so think twice before you install it as it might be potentially dangerous. There is no news about the official release of service pack 1 till now.

A Chinese website has posted IE 9 preview screenshots and said it will use the Metro UI, the same which is used in Zune HD and Windows Phone 7 series interface.

The reports certain features that will be present in the upcoming Internet Explorer 9. They report,

New version of IE 9 preview version of the title bar of the platform, integrating the address bar, tool bar, search box, the status bar. Click the page title to display the address bar (and the search box, favorites management, access history viewer), the website finish loading cases, the address bar to display only part of the title page.

However, the website is in Chinese but you can use automatic Google translate to translate the page to get the complete information about IE9.

Microsoft Office 2011 suite includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlooks.

Screenshots show that each application has a ribbon almost like Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows. The interface is quite similar to Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows. The screenshots also show some of the new features that will be present in Word and Excel as well.

According to BGR,

We’ve just scored some of the first shots of Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, and while they are said to be very early, you can clearly see the progress that has been made in the transition to native Cocoa applications. Outlook for Mac looks absolutely delicious, and we can’t wait to actually get our hands on it. Also included in the shots are the 2011 versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Just a few days back, the latest upcoming version of Windows Live Messenger 2010 was leaked over the Internet, patched so that non-beta testers can also give it a try.

Microsoft first revealed plans for a Windows Live Messenger iPhone app last year in December. But it seems, the Messenger iPhone app will be hitting the App Store in June.

Yesterday only, Tom Warren of Neowin tweeted after the Bing keynote, that the app will be released in June. The announcement for the Windows Live Messenger app on iPhone was first made by him last year.

As the second day of MIX10 kicks off, Microsoft unveiled the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview build for developers to try and experience how fast is the next IE.

Since the older versions of Internet Explorer had many bugs that caused many people to shift from their default Windows browsers to other alternative, Microsoft now attempts to bring back all the users who are using other web browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox.

Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft General Manager of team responsible for the design, development, and release of Internet Explorer said,

“We are committed to updating the preview every eight weeks.”

Internet Explorer 9 is built upon a new Javascript engine known as Chakra which is faster and supports greater interoperability and standards. They also claim that the new Internet Explorer 9 will be faster and much more stable then the older versions which is a good sign, if they want to get hold of high browser market share.

As many people speculated, Microsoft declared Silverlight 4 as the functionality platform for Windows Phone 7 Series. Microsoft also unveiled Express Blend 4 beta which also adds support for Silverlight 4, .NET Framework 4 and Visual Studio 2010.

Microsoft’s Vice President, Scott Guthrie said,

Using Silverlight, you can deliver awesome applications for Windows Phone 7. It’s fully hardware-accelerated; it enables you to build smooth, fluid UI; you can choose to use either the default look-and-feel of the Windows Phone app [light text on dark background] or…you can have a custom app UI yourself. What this means is, you can build killer applications for this device.

Microsoft is working really hard in order to compete with the Silverlight substitute, Adobe Flash, by introducing features that were not present in the beta. They are even extending the new Silverlight in their upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series operating system which they describe as the functionality platform for WP7. Let’s see what else Microsoft releases in their ongoing Mix10 conference.

After Seesmic for Android and Seesmic for BlackBerry, they have now introduced, Seesmic for Windows Phone at the MIX10 conference which is being held in Las Vegas.

Seesmic for Windows Phone is still in its early development stages, and by the time first Windows Phone 7 devices hit the market, they would be fully utilizing the Windows Phone’s OS rich user experience and full integration of Bing maps and its geo-location features.

More features and plugins will be created when they are made available.

At MIX10, along with the announcement for Seesmic for Windows phone, they also announced Seesmic Desktop, which is a Silverlight-based Twitter client for Windows and Mac.

In the latest Windows Update, Microsoft prompts users of Internet Explorer using Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 to make an “important choice” of choosing their web browser. The move is part of a settlement with the European Commission.

This update will be delivered to you via Automatic Updates, or if you have that disabled, you can get it from the Windows Update website. It doesn’t alter anything in your system, other than it unpins IE from your taskbar and asks you what browser you want to use.

The list of web browsers being offered by Microsoft are:

• Avant
• Chrome
• Firefox
• Flock
• Green Browser
• Internet Explorer
• K-meleon
• Maxthon
• Opera
• Safari
• Sleipnir
• Slim

Remember, this is only for users who use Internet Explorer as their default browser. Windows users who already use other web browsers i.e. Firefox, Opera etc will not be prompted to choose.

Microsoft Office 2012 RTM is set to release exactly an year after Windows 8 RTM. How true is this news? Only time will tell. You never know when Microsoft might change its mind when to release a product.

The next Office iteration is currently in the public beta phase, which has been downloaded over 2 million times in just seven weeks of its release. The pricing and system requirements have already been out.

On January 20, at the Nashville Technology Council at the Trevecca Nazarene University, Ballmer said:

You’ll see the new version of Office, which comes out here in just a couple of months. It not only works on your PC but it will work through any Web browser and down onto the phone in new and rich ways. And so we keep pushing some themes.

Neowin has posted some screenshots of the upcoming Windows Live Messenger 2010. They are the first ones to appear online.

It looks like the 2010 version will bring some nice features that IM addicts and average users have been requesting for years. According to the screenshot, tabbed-browsing will be finally coming to WLM.

And for social network junkies, Windows Live Messenger will have in-built features and support for Twitter and Facebook – cool, isn’t it?

Now I can’t wait for the first beta version to come out and give it  a spin!

This was announced and released yesterday at the day 2 of Microsoft Professional Developers Conference 2009 (PDC09).

Silverlight 4 was presented and demonstrated with some practical applications that are able to take pictures and modify the image in real-time, using a web-based service. Microsoft also released some, statistics on Silverlight 3, being installed on 33% of all computers and mobile phones during summer 2009. Silverlight 3 is now installed on approximately 45% of all computers and mobile devices around the world today.

Internet Explorer 9 will, along with other new features, use the power of your GPU to render graphics. Now this sounds interesting for a browser to use our GPU, but still it’s IE and we’ll never know if it’s good or bad till we get the first beta version. It will also have built-in support for rounded corner CSS and a new JS engine will be there in IE9.

Microsoft has not unveiled any dates or when Internet Explorer 9 would be available for public download. According to Neowin, the latest internal build demonstrated was labeled as 7658.0.091116-1745.

After using the beta and RC releases, I’m impressed how Microsoft has worked hard to put IE back into the browser-war! IE8 is available for Windows XP, Vista and Server 2003 and 2008. I don’t see any IE8 links for Windows 7. Looks like, Microsoft has something else in mind for the Windows 7 users.

Microsoft Gazelle, a new web browser project by Microsoft was recently brought into the spotlight on Microsoft Research.

According to the information provided by Microsoft, this web browser will be more like an Operating System with many new features that you won’t find in Firefox, Chrome or even in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

This is what the Research publication says:

In this paper, we introduce Gazelle, a secure web browser constructed as a multi-principal OS. Gazelle’s Browser Kernel is an operating system that exclusively manages resource protection and sharing across web site principals. This construction exposes intricate design issues that no previous work has identified, such as legacy protection of cross-origin script source, and cross-principal, cross-process display and events protection. We elaborate on these issues and provide comprehensive solutions.

Ofcourse, this will be greatly increasing the perfomace and security – in other words, can come up as the safest web browser of the world.

There is no information on its release or any other details as this project is still under works. But I’m sure, Microsoft will soon reveal more about it as time passes.

Today, Microsoft unveiled Microsoft Recite, a new service to the public that could record random voice notes and you can recall that message later by speaking back to the app.

Currently, Microsoft has just released a “Technology Preview”, an early version for the public to try and can only be used on devices running Windows Mobile version 6.0 or higher.

Microsoft Recite is different from speech recognition. (How?) Speech recognition requires you to speak the words accurately. On the other side, Recite uses voice pattern matching, that analyzes the patterns in your speech and finds matches between two recordings (stored notes).

It would be really nice to see our phones reminding us of our important meeting, birthdays and other events – specially for forgetting minds!
