In this tutorial, we’ll be using an iPhone Ethernet driver written by Diego Giagio and several packages from Jonathan Beck’s PPA.

iPhone Tethering on Ubuntu 9.10 Using USB

First step is to add the PPA repository to your Synaptic repositories. Go to Terminal and run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonabeck/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install automake autoconf libtool libusb-dev libfuse-dev libglib2.0-dev libxml2-dev libreadline5-dev libusbmux-dev libplist-dev libplist++-dev libplist++1 git-core build-essential libgnutls-dev python2.6-dev

After it finishes, you will have a few more things needed to get it working correctly. Both of these are downloaded via GIT repositories that require you to manually compile them. The first we will download is libiphone from Matt Colyer’s GIT repository. In your terminal window execute:

git clone git://github.com/MattColyer/libiphone.git

It should download and un-zip it in whatever folder you are in. Type in:

cd libiphone

and hopefully you will be moved into it’s directory. Next, you will need to compile the libraries so that the iPhone ethernet driver can access it. To do so execute:

./autogen.sh

followed by

sudo make install

If all goes well, you will get no errors and be back at the command prompt. Exit the directory:

cd ..

and download the iPhone Ethernet driver from it’s GIT repository:

git clone git://github.com/dgiagio/ipheth.git

now, we will need to enter into directory as well as the first directory we’ll work in:

cd ipheth/ipheth-pair

Once there you can excute:

make

followed by

sudo make install

If all goes well you should be at a command prompt again without errors. Now navigate to the last directory needed by executing:

cd ..
cd ipheth-driver

Once there you can execute the final compiling commands:

make

followed by

sudo make install

Hopefully you got no errors and are back to the command prompt.

Now, you can execute the driver:

sudo insmod ipheth.ko

Now plug in your iPhone with the USB cable to check if Internet is now working. If not, double check if tethering is enable on your phone from: Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering and turn it on.

You can easily tether your iPhone 3G or 3GS running on iPhone 3.0 or 3.1.x firmware with your laptop/netbook running on Ubuntu 9.10.

iPhone Tethering on Ubuntu 9.10 Using Bluetooth

Here’s a simple tutorial on how you can tether your iPhone on Ubuntu 9.10 via Bluetooth. Just follow the steps below and you will be connected in no time!

Tethering iPhone on Ubnutu via Bluetooth is really simple as pairing two iPhones. You will need to install a new Bluetooth manager aptly named “blueman” from the Blueman Project PPA repository.

Run the following commands to install Blueman.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:blueman/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install blueman

After the installation finishes, open the “Bluetooth Manager” which can be found in the “System>Preferences” menu.

Now turn on bluetooth on your iPhone and make it discoverable. In the “Bluetooth Manager” program press the “search” button and the list should be populated with nearby discoverable Bluetooth devices. Locate your iPhone 3G(S) from the list, select it, and press the “Keys” (pair) button above it.

Once paired, press the diamond on Bluetooth Manager to trust your iPhone. Now on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering and turn it on.

In the Bluetooth Manager program on your computer, right click on your iPhone and select “Network Access Point” from the option “Connect to:” it will work and hopefully give you a “Connection Established” message.

Your phone should now be connected and ready to use your iPhone’s data connection on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) using Bluetooth.

The browser handles common Internet-related tasks such as displaying websites, sending and receiving e-mail messages, managing contacts, IRC online chatting, downloading files via BitTorrent, and reading web feeds.

Install Opera with Flash, Java Plugins in Ubuntu

Opera users on Ubuntu don’t get Java or Flash enabled on their web-browser. To install Opera with Flash and Java plugins, follow the steps below:

1. Download the Opera .deb package from here.

2. Once downloaded, install it using the following command:

sudo dpkg -i opera_10.00.4585.gcc4.qt3_i386.deb

3. Now install the Flash plugin using this command:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

4. And to install Java, use this:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin ubuntu-restricted-extras

This should get you Flash and Java support in your Opera web browser in Ubuntu. In case you run into any problems with video playback, follow the alternative fix here.

At the recent Ubuntu Developer’s Summit, Ubuntu announced its planned to include an App Center officially in its OS which will allow users to easily manage applications using that.

Now known as, Software Store, will let you add, remove or update application packages from a simple graphical interface without messing up with commands.

From the Ubuntu Wiki:

In version 1, it will build on the basic philosophy of Add/Remove Applications and make it even easier to use. In later versions, it will grow to replace Synaptic, gdebi, some parts of the Computer Janitor, and possibly Update Manager. Having a single interface will make handling software easier, socially improve security, hopefully free space on the CD, and provide a prominent showcase for Ubuntu and partner software.

Here are some mockup sketches of the upcoming Software Store in Ubuntu:

Ubuntu developers have set some goals for October 2009 (Ubuntu 9.10) release that Ubuntu users might like knowing:

1. Include in Ubuntu 9.10 a simple and fun interface for finding, installing, and removing software. This will likely involve:

A new name.

A highly graphical “main entrance” or “front page”, that allows browsing software by category and subcategory, and perhaps includes featured and/or popular applications.

Fast and error-tolerant search.

Attractive, informative, and easy-to-understand presentation of individual software packages within the interface (with this presentation also being used for apt: URL links to graphical applications).

Interactive demonstration of how to launch the software you’ve just installed.

The ability to continue browsing available software, and queue up installation/removal requests, while other changes are being made.

Better security than the current installation mechanism (i.e. use of PolicyKit instead of gksudo).

2. Increase use of apt: links by Ubuntu enthusiasts, software projects, and ISVs, replacing terminal commands or standalone downloads. This will likely involve:

A redirector Web service (e.g. redirecting from http://apt.ubuntu.com/package-name to apt:package-name), with helpful handling of error cases, to better cater for people who are not running Ubuntu when they follow the link (and to better cater for forums and other CMSes that do not allow direct apt: links).

Prominent and highly understandable information on ubuntu.com about how to get your software (whether Free or non-Free) packaged for Ubuntu.

An apt: evangelism campaign for projects that already have their software packaged in the Ubuntu repositories.

3. Fine-tune the interface presented when software updates are available. This may involve:

When updates are presented automatically, collapsing the list of updates by default, concentrating instead on the existence of updates and the choice to install them now or later.

Presentation of the new better descriptions of security updates.

4. Establish a system within Launchpad for registered users to suggest a better description, category, keywords, and/or screenshot for a software package, and for the package maintainer to incorporate those changes into a new version of the package, so that end users can find the software more easily later.

Google announced yesterday, about the availability of it’s web browser, Chrome, for Mac OS X and Linux. It is the first official developer release of Chrome and is just for testing purposes for now.

Chrome was initially released for Windows back in September last year, and at that time Google promised a Mac and Linux version later.

Two weeks later, we saw a Mac and Linux port of the open-source browser project, Chromium (which powers Google Chrome). But that still was an unofficial release. Since then Google worked on an official version version of Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux.

The current Google Chrome release for Mac OS X and Linux is still very unstable and have quite a few missing security features and options, which of course will be fixed in the coming builds.

Mac and Linux users who were eager to get Chrome for their OS could definitely give this a try and help Google improve this browser with your feedback.

You can download Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux from here: Chrome for Mac/Linux

WordPress 2.6.3, which was released yesterday, is a patch release that fixes two security vulnerabilities involving Snoopy, a library that WordPress uses internally.

All WordPress users should upgrade to the latest WordPress version to avoid being a victim of this particular vulnerability. There are many obvious and less obvious ways to upgrade WordPress, a few possible ways, in decreasing order of required time, are:

Download the latest WordPress source, unzipde it on your harddisk, connect to your server via ftp and transfer the files. Then follow the upgrade instructions on the WordPress website. This is the method Windows users are most likely to use ;-)

Do the above, but transfer files via scp

Log on to your server via ssh / putty, do a wget http://wordpress.org/download/ to download the latest installer zip file. Unzip using unzip latest.zip. mv the required files to your WordPress folder and run the installer using the instructions from the WordPress website.

Download and install the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin on your WordPress blog. Go to the plugin page and follow the simple instructions each time there is a new upgrade available. This is suitable if you are running a single blog.

If you want to upgrade from 2.6.2 to version 2.6.3 , you simply need two files [file1] and [file2]. Just download and overwrite these files in your wp-includes folder, afte changing their permissions, using any one of the methods listed above. Doing it via ssh/wget/cp should take less than a minute.

Whichever method you choose to use, do keep your WordPress installation up-to-date to avoid potential problems and hacking attempts.

Google Chrome was released with an amazing hype, which Google created in just two days with an online comic. Unfortunately, Mac and Linux weren’t lucky enough to try out Chrome as it was a Windows-only release.

When asked by Google, it said that Mac and Linux versions are in development and will be released soon.

Using Chrome’s codebase, developers over at CodeWeavers have created CrossOver Chromium, which is a Mac and Linux port of the open source Chromium web browser. It runs the Windows version of Chromium natively on both Mac and Linux.

CrossOver Chromium on Mac OS X

CrossOver Chromium on Ubuntu Linux

This is just an unofficial release for people who want to see what Chrome will look like on Mac and Linux. You can download it from the link below.

The third alpha version Ubuntu 8.10 (codename Intrepid Ibex) has released yesterday, and is now available for download. The final version is scheduled to release this October.

Even the Alpha 3 doesn’t bring any major updates or modifications in Ubuntu 8.10. Alpha 2 came up with many software updates, but this one doesn’t. I just want to keep my readers up to date with the latest Ubuntu 8.10 development. Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 3 comes with a brand new development version of the Nautilus file manager (with tabs) and a new Linux kernel.

You can now also request a Live CD of Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 3 and try it without installing.

Softpedia has some very nice screenshots of the latest alpha, which I would like to share here with my readers.

Ubuntu Tweak is a freeware that allows you to easily tweak your Ubuntu by letting you configure hidden settings and you can customize your desktop environment like showing or hiding Computer, Home, Trash or Networks icons, change power or secuity settings on the fly or change the splash screen. You can also use it to quickly adjust settings for GNOME Panel and some more advanced security settings.

Currently, it only works with Ubuntu GNOME desktop, that means it won’t work on Kubuntu, Edubuntu or Xubuntu. The interface is very easy-to-use and I don’t think an Ubuntu beginner like me would have any problems in using it.
