Panoramio service by Google allows you to organize your photos by tagging them. Its most powerful feature is geo-tagging or location marking. I checked the link, even clicked on the main logo of AdSense Forums, but in the end found the newly revamped forum on every try.

Going through the Google Blog, I found that Google announced its newly designed, revamped Help Forums on Tuesday, for better search results along with some basic features following a great response and contribution by users and help seekers since it’s existence.

New Features include

• improved search results, including posts from current and new forums
• the ability to designate especially helpful forum members as “Top Contributors”
• a reputation and ranking system
• the ability for users, Top Contributors and Googlers to mark questions as answered
• easier access to Help Center content

Today I came across another multi-protocol messenger called Miranda IM. It is an open-source multi protocol instant messenger client for Microsoft Windows. It is smaller, faster and easier than others and is also very light on system resources.

The first one was that we were not able to start XAMPP on our server after installing it because Slicehost offers 64-bit machines only. XAMPP is currently only availably as 32-bit application. We will have to use 32-bit library to make it work.

XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use. Just download, extract and start.

If you’re also having problems in installing XAMPP on a 64-bit machine, then follow the steps below and you will be running XAMPP on your server in no time!

How To Run XAMPP on 64-Bit Machine

Open /etc/apt/sources.list and uncomment all the lines. Then in Ubuntu, type:

sudo apt-get update

Then type:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

That’s it! Try running it by “sudo lampp start” and it should now start and work perfectly fine.

The new PSP firmware 4.05 has released and is now available for download. There were rumours about it releasing in a week or so, but didn’t knew it would be out so soon!

The latest update features new new music playback visualizations and the ever-conclusive “other features” as said by the PlayStation Blog. There is nothing earth-shattering in it, it just features a couple of new visualizers, one if you happen to have a wallpaper while another is for those who don’t.

No one could still find what the “other features” are. Hopefully, this won’t cause any hardware compatibility issues.

Last month, Emaar Properties unveiled a world-class permanent water fountain project with an integral light and sound show for Downtown Burj Dubai. It will be the world’s largest fountain at over 900 ft (275 metres) in length, equivalent to that of over two football fields and it is about 25 per cent larger than The Fountains at Bellagio in Las Vegas in area. Powerful water nozzles will shoot water sprays to heights of over 500 ft (150 metres), equivalent to that of a 50-story building.

The fountains – which are yet to be named – will feature over 6,600 lights and 50 colour projectors that will create a vibrant visual spectrum of over 1,000 different water expressions by shooting 22,000 gallons of water. The total cost to built this is AED 800 million (US$218 million)! This project is expected to draw over 10 million visitors annually.

The fountain on Burj Dubai Lake is more than a visual spectacle that adds to the aesthetics of Downtown Burj Dubai. It is an engineering marvel and will further contribute to Dubai’s rich array of tourist attractions.

The fountain is positioned next to Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building, and The Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destinations. As I have said before, these fountains are yet to be named, and a cash prize of $27,225 will be given to the person who suggests the perfect name for this water fountain project.

This fountain project is scheduled to be operational in 2009!

I had a few images that I wanted to convert into icons to use with my desktop shortcuts, so I Googled a few converters, but didn’t found any good ones, so I continued my search till I came across Bradicon. It is a free online image to icon converter, that will convert your images (supports all major formats) to an ICO file. This icon file can be downloaded and used with shortcuts.

To convert an image to icon, simply press the big “Browse” button, and select the image that you want to convert. Uploading progress will be shown, and once the conversion gets completed, you will see the link to download this file as an ICO.

A popular social news site and an early Digg competitor, Reddit, has gone open-source today. They announced a day before that they have an announcement to make tomorrow, and the invite page had an image of a penguin which meant that the announcement was something related to to Linux or open source. The next day they released their own code to the public and now you can also build a site like Reddit.

Since reddit’s beginning, we have stood on the shoulders of giants in the open source world. Every library, tool and platform we depend on is open. Until now, the only portion of reddit that wasn’t freely available is reddit itself. We are proud and excited that we’re finally giving back to the community that has given us so much.

A new site code.reddit.com has been set up for everyone to download the source code and there you will find everything that you need to get started. Reddit want users to help them improve the site and contribute more to the community. It is licensed under Common Public Attribution License. Just for your information, Reddit’s code is in Python.

In earlier versions of Opera, it wasn’t possible to edit the number of slots but with the latest release, it is now possible using a very simple hack, thanks to Opera Watch.

How To Add More Slots In Opera Speed Dial

Follow the instructions below to add more slots in your Opera speed dial. Make sure you have at least one site already added in your speed dial.

1. Note the path to your Opera Preferences (type about:opera into the address bar).

2. Close Opera now. This is important to prevent Opera from modifying the configuration file we’re about to edit.

3. Now go to your Opera Preferences directory, and open speedial.ini in any text editor.

4. Add the following lines and adjust number of rows & columns to your requirement.

[Size]
Rows=4
Columns=4

If you use widescreen monitor, increase number of columns.

5. Start Opera.

The number of rows and columns depends on your screen size, so you’ll have to play to find out what will suit you. I hope you have enjoyed this trick and will come back for more.

Yesterday, I installed Firefox 3 RC3 and was amazed to see how fast and better my favourite browser has become. I actually use lots of addons with my Firefox 2, and I found that most of them were disabled after upgrading. That’s because they still haven’t been updated yet by their developers and Firefox 3 doesn’t even try to run addons that are not compatible. FEBE is one of the plugins that are not (see update below) compatible with Firefox 3 RC3.

Then I started Googling, for something that would help me get over with this and in the end found an article on Lifehacker that solved my problem.

Note: Only do this if you’re willing to deal with possible extension bugs and security risks!

How To Force Enable Incompatible Extensions In Firefox 3

• Type about:config into Firefox’s address bar and click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button.
• Right-click anywhere. Choose New>Boolean. Make the name of your new config value extensions.checkCompatibility and set it to false.
• Make another new boolean pair called extensions.checkUpdateSecurity and set the value to false.
• Restart Firefox.

All the addons that were disabled due to incompatibity will now be enabled and working. Remember, some extensions might cause problems as they are not updated for the latest Firefox by the developers themselves.

Uploading a PDF document is simple as cake (they don’t offer anything to eat, though!). Just go to the Google Docs homepage, and click Upload. The maximum size you can upload from your computer is 10MB and and from web URL is 2MB.

This feature is really going to get popular on Google Docs as it was the most-requested feature to be added. Google Docs is already a very popular source for sharing documents with others.

Some bad things about Google Docs:

• PDF’s that are protected cannot be searched and cannot have the text highlighted.
• While searching for documents using Google Docs search, PDF file support is not added yet.
• Thumbnail sidebar can’t be collapsed, which is especially painful for anyone with a small screen.

This is not all, you also get stats graph which shows you the number of followers for the last 7 days. All you have to do is, put in your Twitter username on the site, and copy/paste the generated HTML code where ever you want your badge to display. TwitterCounter badge is exactly the same as FeedBurner’s chicklet. The only difference I see is the colour scheme which matches that of Twitter.

Just two days after the release of Opera 9.5 RC, they are out with the final release of Opera 9.5. After months of beta testing, the final version is much faster and cooler than the previous ones. It also has a new metallic default theme. The most recently added feature is Opera Link, that helps you synchronize your bookmarks between Opera Mini and Opera 9.5 desktop.

On WordPress’ birthday, I published a screenshot of my upcoming WordPress theme, which will be based on the new Dashboard theme of WordPress. I’m actually a big WordPress fan, and wanted to use a theme like the dashboard. But unfortunately, I didn’t found any and ended up in making one my own. The theme is very simple and clear in design and offers fresh colours that don’t go hard on eyes. Since the past few days, lots of changes have been made in it. I’m still experimenting with better fonts to match it exactly with the default Dashboard theme.

I’ve decided to name it DashPress (Dash for Dashboard, and Press for WordPress) after much brainstorming. I’ll be releasing it in a couple of weeks (or may be earlier) since I’ve got lots of other work to do as well these days. I’d suggest you to subscribe to my RSS feed to know about the latest updates on the theme.

I’ve set up a demo site for everyone to test and see what the theme will be like and let me know what you think about it. This will be my very first theme, and will be my first attempt to come out with something like this using CSS. I used trial and error method to make this theme. I’m still trying to fix as many bugs as I can. Any help, suggestions or feedback would be highly appreciated.

Speed Dial is a Firefox extension developed by Josep del Rio that brings the same functionality to Firefox. With this, you can easily and quickly access your favourite and most websites. After installing this extension, you can open Speed Dial by two methods. By using the Speed Dial button beside the search box (screenshot above), or by entering chrome://speeddial/content in the address bar.

You can assign websites to Speed Dial by using any of the following two methods:

• Use the new “Set as Speed Dial” option in the bookmarks menu
• Right click on a tab, and choose “Set as Speed Dial”

Speed Dial automatically loads in new Firefox windows, but can be set to open in every new tab like in Opera.

FeedBurner announced back in April, that all FeedBurner users will be migrated to Google Accounts. But the interesting part is, that Google will no longer use feedburner.com as their home or in the feed URLs. Their new home will be feedburner.google.com, a site that announces you can use FeedBurner to “analyze, publicize, optimize, and monetize your feeds”. At the moment, you can’t login or create new accounts at the new home, but this will start working once the migration process gets started.

The feeds hosted at FeedBurner will be moved the new FeedBurner URL like this: http://feeds.feedburner.com/name to http://feeds.feedburner.google.com/name, as you can see for this feed.

I personally don’t like the new URL, because it’s quite long. I hope they allow us to use both the URLs or this migration would break all the feeds.feedburner.com/name feeds.

Opera 9.5 has been in beta stages for several months now, but with the release candidate release, things look much better now. Several new features have been added, and many bugs have been fixed. Here’s what Opera team had to say on this release:

You might have noticed we’ve focused on stabilizing the Opera 9.5 snapshots lately, waxing the new look and feel of Opera, improving performance, security and most of all fixing a lot of bugs. Almost two years after the release of Opera 9.0, Opera 9.5 is now (almost) ready to be released.

Opera now has a new feature called Opera Link technology, which allow users to synchronize their bookmarks between both Opera 9.5 desktop and Opera Mini.

Like all the other RCs, if no major issues are found, we can expect the final version to be out somewhere in June. Still no release date has been given by the Opera team, but it seems to be done very soon.

LockImage is an open-source application that can be used to password-protect images and can be opened on another computer without the need of the application itself. It protects an image by converting it into a password-protected executable and you can view them in an embedded image viewer. The only downside of this application is that images once turned into password-protected executable, cannot be converted back to standard images.

How To Password Protect Images With LockImage

The compressed installation package contains of just one file, and no installation is required. Simply extract it anywhere in your PC, and run the EXE file LockImage.exe. From the file-menu, select Open and open the image you want to protect. Then again from the file-menu, select Save As and choose the location where you want the image-executable to be saved. Then you will be prompted to type the password for the image twice and click OK. You will now see a new executable which contains your image and is password-protected.

Another thing I didn’t liked about this application is that once the executable is created, emaiIing it could be a problem since many email services do not allow EXE files. But compression tools like SecureZIP can always come in handy.

Yay, WWDC 2008 is just 24 hours away now! The wait is finally going to get over. If you think you live on Mars, and don’t know what this is all about. Well, Apple’s new 3G iPhone (aka iPhone 2.0) is expected to be announced at WWDC, Apple’s developer event. I will hardly be able to sleep tonight. I’ve my eyes jammed on TechCrunch and Engadget for the live coverage and news of WWDC. It will be starting today (Yes, it’s 9th July here already) at 10:00AM PT / 1:00PM ET. I really wish I could attend this. WWDC is going to be the most over-covered event of the year!

The rumours are just endless! Hundreds of fake images (claiming to be real) of 3G iPhone are available on technology blogs. Who knows, may be one of them might be the real one. Even I posted them (1, 2) some time back.

The new skin features a dark metallic look for Opera, and since I love metallic colours, I’m loving this theme. I feel the tab buttons are a little bigger than they should be. May be that’s because I’m used to thin Firefox tabs. And the close button, at the upper right corner of every tab is also very small. I hope they make it bigger in the final release.

Overall, this new skin goes well according to my taste and the dark metallic look makes it even more interesting. You can try it yourself by downloading Opera 9.5 Snapshot from below.

It’s been reported that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) ships with an out-of-date version of Adobe’s Flash Player that’s vulnerable to recently-spotted attacks, according to Microsoft’s support documentation. Windows XP SP3 includes Flash Player 9.0.115.0, a version released by Adobe Systems Inc. in December 2007, and was superseded by Version 9.0.124.0 on April 8, nearly two weeks before Microsoft decided SP3 was done by giving it a release to manufacturing (RTM) label and sending it out for distribution.

It has been confirmed by Adobe, that the version 9.0.115.0, included in Windows XP SP3, is vulnerable to the ongoing attacks, which have originated from Chinese servers. Users have been attacked after visiting legitimate web sites that had been hacked using now-common SQL-injection attacks.

If you would like to check what Flash Player you have on your computer, open this Adobe page in your browser. It is recommended that all users should now upgrade to the version 9.0.124.0.

I’m glad that I still haven’t installed SP3 and my SP2 is running just fine and smooth on Windows XP. From now on, I’m never going to try out any major patches by Microsoft, at least not in the initial six months! I love my computer, and don’t want to get hacked!

Some web services like Browsershots have been very useful to test websites in various version of different web-browsers. Recently, the release of IETester will make things much easier now. IETester is a free web-browser that allow you to have the rendering and javascript engines of IE8 beta 1, IE7, IE 6 and IE5.5 on Vista and XP, as well as the installed IE in the same process. Now you can test websites in various versions of IE, all at the same time in different tabs side by side.

IETester is still in alpha stage, and with comes many limitations. You can read them below as listed by the developer.

• When resizing, the content may disappear. (Will be fixed in the next version)
• The Previous/Next buttons are not working properly
• Focus is not working properly
• Java applets are not working
• Flash is not working on IE6 instance

This is a new method and is being adopted and used by many, since it’s more easier, faster and portable way of installing Ubuntu on a computer. You only need a 1GB USB stick and Ubuntu already installed on a computer.

Requirements

You will have to make sure you meet the requirements to create the live USB stick of Ubuntu.

• Ubuntu 8.04 Destktop CD
• 1GB USB Stick (1GB, at least!)
• Internet connection
• “Boot from USB” option in the BIOS (on the computer where you want to install Ubuntu)

How To Create A Live USB Stick Of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

Let the tutorial begin!

1. Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources, click on the second tab (Third-Party Software), click the ‘Add’ button and paste the following line:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/probono/ubuntu hardy main

2. Click the ‘Add Source’ button and then click on the ‘Close’ button. It will ask if you want to reload the information about the available software.

3. Now, open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and paste the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install liveusb

4. When the installation is over, insert the USB Stick on your PC and the Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop CD on your CD/DVD-ROM drive.

5. Insert your USB stick and Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop CD.

6. Then go to System -> Administration -> Install Live USB.

7. Click on the “Options” link and then check the “Download and integrate Adobe Flash Player” box. Then click the ‘Execute’ button and you will be asked if you want to install Ubuntu on that USB disk and if you are sure that you want to erase all the data and partitions on it. If you are sure, click ‘Yes’ on both questions. The data will now start being copied and will take about 5-6 minutes for the whole process to get over.

Now you can remove the USB stick and enjoy installing Ubuntu on your friends’ computers or run and use it directly from the USB stick. It’s better to have a bootable live USB stick rather than having a bootable CD, since it’s smaller in size and easier to carry anywhere.

Acrobat.com integrates the three recently launched online services by Adobe: Brio, Buzzword and Share. Currently, it is only the public beta, the final launch is yet to come. With Acrobat.com’s launch, Adobe takes on Google Docs, Microsoft Office Live Workspace, WebEx, and GoTo Meeting, Scribd and DocStoc, all at the same time.

Brio is the light version of Acrobat Connect and it lets you have meetings with up to 3 people for free. Its services include:

• Screen sharing
• Desktop video
• Voice conference
• Chat
• White-board

Buzzword is the default word-processor in Acrobat.com. It works like a wiki, where multiple people can edit a document and leave comments. It also supports all kinds of fonts.

All the documents you create using Buzzword, are saved and organized in what’s called Adobe Share. It’s a document and file-sharing service by Adobe which offers 5GB of free storage space and lets you embed documents in a widget on other sites. Document-embedding is the best feature I liked about Share and 5GB of space is more than enough for just saving documents.

The trio mentioned above: Brio, Buzzword and Share makes up Acrobat.com. More services are expected to be added soon.

You will need an Adobe ID to try out Acrobat.com or any of the other services by Adobe.
