Facebook Messenger for iPhone and Android was released a couple of days back which is a standalone app for messaging to your Facebook friends and mobile contacts.

The app was released for iPhone and Android first, but according to the Help pages on Facebook, Facebook Messenger will soon be making its way to BlackBerry devices as well.

This app is a direct competitor to BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp (both of them used on BlackBerry a lot), and now Facebook wants to dominate that area as well.

Messenger is available on iPhone and Android devices, and will soon be available on Blackberries. To get the app, search for “Facebook Messenger” in your phone’s app store.

No release period or dates have been given, but we believe the app is still in development and will be released soon. Even if you don’t have Facebook Messenger on BlackBerry, you can still reply to messages from Chat, Messages on Facebook website or text messages.

Facebook has just launched their Facebook Messenger for Mobile, a standalone messaging app for smartphones. According to Mashable, Facebook will be rolling out several new features to its Facebook Chat feature.

Now you can send messages directly to your friends on their mobile phones, so you stay in touch no matter where you go. Message friends using Facebook Messenger for Mobile or anyone in your mobile contacts. This looks more of an approach like WhatsApp, BlackBerry Messenger etc.

Messaging is now even faster and you don’t have to be online in Facebook Chat all the time just to chat with friends. You can stay offline in Facebook Chat and still chat with friends using the mobile app.

Facebook Messenger for Mobile also supports group conversations, to make plans on the go and you can also share photos. I’m guessing, Facebook would soon be releasing video chat features as well to the mobile apps.

Facebook just launched the long-rumoured video calling in-collaboration with Skype. They have also announced group chat and a few other improvements to Messages.

The video call feature will roll out to users in a few weeks. You can still try out the video call feature – only if you would like to try.

How to Try Facebook Video Calling Now

Follow the steps below to try out the new Facebook video calling feature:

• Visit this page on Facebook, and click the Get Started button.
• It will now ask you to set up for the first time.
• Install the Facebook video calling app/plug-in that will pop up. Your friend will have to install as well.
• Once it is installed you should now be ready to try out the new Facebook video calling feature with your friends!

If your friend doesn’t answer the video call or is unavailable, you can even record a video message and leave for him to see later.

Facebook has very annoying apps which tags friends in photos and shows up on your wall. You can of course completely disable tagging in photos/videos, but there should be another easier way to get rid of these photos.

Now you can “Remove post and untag…” yourself from a photo on Facebook. When you get tagged in a photo, you can remove yourself from it without having to open the photo itself.

How to “Remove Post and Untag” on Facebook

Just go to your profile, on the wall post where it shows the post in which you’re tagged, click on the X (right corner) of a photo tag post on your wall and there you will the option to “Remove Post and Untag…”

Pretty simple, eh? I recently discovered this to quickly remove my tag from unwanted photos that friends (or applications) tag in.

Usually when you had to edit comments, what did you do? Copied the text, delete the comment and again type it down with the correction you wanted to make. Oh well, this is not needed anymore.

How to Edit Comments on Facebook

Whenever you need to edit a comment, press the X sign at the top right corner of every comment. The comment will be editable then. Make the changes, and press Enter again to post it.

Pretty simple, eh? I found this while trying to delete a comment which had a typo in it, but was surprised to see that we can edit comments now.

The new photo viewer in my view is really bad and the previous one was a lot better, with a cleaner look. This new ‘theater’ look is no better.

How to Disable New Photo ‘Theater’ Viewer in Facebook

You can follow the following solution to disable the new Facebook photo viewer.

When you open a photo in the theater mode, check the URL of the photo and from end of the URL and remove “&theater“. This will display the entire album back in the old viewer.

I know this is not a permanent solution, and you will have to repeat that step every time you open a new photo. I’ll update as soon as I find a better solution i.e. a Greasemonkey script.

UPDATE: Here’s a permanent solution to get the old photo viewer back in Facebook!

Facebook rolled out a new, updated version of Facebook for Android v1.5 which now brings Facebook Chat support and push notifications to your Android device.

If you had taken a look in the Comments section for Facebook for Android in the Android Market, Chat was the most requested feature for the Android app to come on par with the iPhone version.

Facebook for Android can still add a lot more functionality, but I guess we should be happy for the frequent updates of Facebook Android app unlike previously where we hardly got an update in six months.

I actually like the new Facebook Profile Page, however, many people seem not to like it and want the old profile page back.

How to Get Back to Old Facebook Profile Page

Facebook has clearly mentioned in their Help docs that once you upgrade to the new Profile page, you cannot go back to the old layout. Well, a workaround can always be found from one way or another.

Some people have reported that if your deactivate your Facebook account for a short time, i.e 10 minutes, and then reactivate it again, you will get the old Facebook Profile Page back.

Facebook introduced a new Profile Page last night at a special event. This new Profile Page revamp brings more focus ‘in your face’. Your basic information and profile is now the priority instead of your wall posts.

They have also rearranged several elements that were not used by much by the users. Your tagged photos have been brought on the top.

Follow the steps below to get the new Facebook Profile Page.

• Visit http://www.facebook.com/about/profile/.
• Login with your Facebook information.
• On then ext landing page, you will see a button on the top right corner that says “Get the New Profile”. Click on that to get the new Profile Page.

Earlier it was very difficult to hide your friends list from some or all of your Facebook friends and public, but now it’s possible.

How to Hide Your Friends List in Facebook

Just follow the simple steps below to hide your friend’s list on Facebook.

1. Log in to your Facebook account.

2. Go to Account > Privacy Settings from any Facebook page.

3. On that page, you will see ‘Connecting on Facebook’, click View Settings under it.

4. Look for “See your friend list” and change the option to whatever you want. To completely hide your friend’s list from everyone, follow the steps below.

5. From the options, choose ‘Custom’ and make its visibility to “Only Me’. That should hide your friends from everyone.

Facebook launched Social Messaging today in a special Facebook Mail event where they announced how they could merge emails, conversations, text messages and friends – all at one place which will be known as Facebook Social Messaging.

Even though Facebook said it is not like Google Wave, I still think Facebook Social Messaging is a combination of Google Wave, Gmail Priority Inbox and Facebook friends.

Facebook’s Social Messaging feature is currently in invite-only and you will have to wait till someone invites you to try out the new feature. Facebook will roll out this feature to everyone in the coming months “very slowly”.

It seemed to be a very nice feature, but it turned out to be an actual mess at the notifications end. Facebook Groups need some fine tuning of how and to whom notifications will be sent from the start.

I was added into a group of 25 members and the next morning I woke up, I had over 50 notification emails just from that group. That was something I never expected.

How to Disable Notification Emails from Facebook Groups

If you want to disable email notifications or tune them to selected group of members only, all you have to do is click on the Edit Notifications button in the top right of the group page and select your options from there.

This was one feature that was always missing from Facebook. And there was no proper service either to backup your Facebook account (SocialSafe did pop up a while ago).

When this feature rolls out, it will be very easy to download/export your information from Facebook. All you have to do is, go to Account (top right menu) > Account Settings > Download Your information. Select the option to download a .zip file which will have your entire Facebook profile, including photos, videos, wall posts, messages, friends, notes and a lot more.

Currently, there is no option to restore or import this data back into Facebook, but I’m sure that feature will be coming out soon once the “Download Your Information” is rolled out for everyone on Facebook.

Places is all about location services and how Facebook users can utilize it. Facebook Places allows you to check-in places just like you do with Foursquare.

Foursquare, Gowalla and Yelp are the launch partners of Facebook Places which will use the new API of Facebook Places and you check-ins will show up at the Places page on Facebook. Places lets you easily share where you are, what you’re doing and the friends you’re with right from your mobile.

• Check in and your update will appear on the Place page, your friends’ News Feed and your Wall.
• Tag the friends you’re with so they can be part of your update.
• Appear in “Here Now” to friends and others nearby who are also checked in.
• Browse status updates of friends checked in nearby.
• After checking in, tap “Here Now” to see who else is checked in where you are.

One thing to remember here is, you have to use Facebook Places to allow your friend to tag you and check-in places when you’re with him. If you’re already using Places, it’s like you checked in yourself without having to do a thing. If you’re not using Places yet, it’s just like being mentioned in a status update.

Facebook Places is now available on Facebook for iPhone 3.2 app which just got updated with the launch of Places. Facebook for Android and BlackBerry will get this feature soon.

However, everything is not unknown at this point in time; AllthingsD has reported that Facebook will be introducing a new feature to their service, which is similar to foursquare’s geo-location based check-in service. This news bit has been reported with the aid of ‘multitude of sources inside Facebook’ and also includes the following piece: Facebook is likely to “integrate other third-party services and will give developers on Facebook’s platform geo-location capabilities.”

However, with all the improvements, there remain some flaws which need to be solved by the Facebook team like the inability to view more than one picture at a time and the photo zoo feature. Thankfully, add-ons are now available for Chrome and Firefox which add useful feature to the Facebook Photos.

Facebook Photo Zoom is a Google Chrome extension which lets user enlarge the Facebook photos once they hover the mouse button over the image. When the plugin is installed, clicking the thumbnail image of the photo in an album will enlarge it to its original size without the user having to actually click on the photo. The same extension exists for the Firefox web browser as well and lets user enlarge Facebook photos in Firefox as well.

For anyone who uses Facebook and loves to view photos of their friends and family members, these two great extensions providing the same functionality are a must have.

Both the Chrome and the Firefox variants of the Facebook Photo Zoom are available at the Extensions Gallery and the Add-ons portal for those two web browsers respectively.

In the last update, Facebook added Inbox support to the app, but the latest Facebook for Android 1.3 is a much-needed update we all wanted from the ugly UI it had.

Almost six months ago, Facebook allowed indexing of profiles in Google which included private profiles as well. Many users with publicly hidden profiles raised questions about this feature, but no positive reply was given by Facebook.

How to Remove Facebook Profile from Google

The new Facebook privacy options also lets you allow or disallow indexing of your profile in Google search results. Follow the steps below to set this option:

• Go to Privacy Settings in Facebook
• Click on Search section link.
• Uncheck the Allow box for Public Search Results option.
• Confirm the selection and you’re all done!

Well, since that was a paid app and people mostly prefer free tools and applications, I’ve found a free method to backup your Facebook profile.

ArchiveFacebook is a free tool that allows you to save content from your Facebook account directly to your hard drive. Archive your photos, messages, activity stream, friends list, notes, events and groups.

It is a Firefox extension, which helps you to save web pages from Facebook and easily manage them. Save content from Facebook directly to your hard drive and view them exactly the same way you currently view them on Facebook.

The addon is still in experimental stage, so you will need to create an account at the Firefox addon website.

After the release of Facebook app for S60 5th edition devices, everyone expected for a S60 3rd Edition version soon, but Nokia took too long to build this app.

Even now, this new Facebook app is not available for all S60 3rd Edition devices. It’s only available for the Nokia E72 and E71.

But if the photo has a higher height than it’s width, you might have to adjust the thumbnail position or it would only show some part of your head or the bottom of the photo.

How to Edit Photo Thumbnail in Facebook

If you want to adjust the thumbnail so that it shows you in it, follow the steps below.

1. Open your profile page.

2. Move your mouse over the profile photo so that you see the link “Change Picture” on the top right corner of your photo.

3. Click on that link and select “Edit Thumbnail”.

4. Now drag your thumbnail in the box to adjust it to your liking. Hit Save and you’re done!

A couple of days ago, we posted a few photos that surfaced on the Internet showing the PS3 dahsboard with Facebook features and options in it. Well, they did look legit and the rumours have been true, afterall!

PS3 Firmware 3.10 now brings Facebook to your PS3 dashboard. You will have to install the new update by directly updating from within your PS3 or by computer.

New Facebook settings can be found under the Account Management section of the PlayStation Network area of the cross-media bar (XMB).

The official PS3 Software Update website still shows PS3 firmware 3.01, but it should soon be updated.

Scrawl has seen the images posted on the United Kingdom section of the PSN which show Facebook options in PlayStation and we could expect that as early as in the next firmware update.

No updates or announcements of the next firmware update, but it could be on Christmas, or even before that. For now, we only have these three screenshots from the PlayStation dashboard with Facebook features.

If you ask me, I’d also like to have Twitter integration for my PS3!

But now I use Google Calendar more to organize and manage events, meetings etc. In this post, I’d like to share a method how to add Facebook birthdays and events to Google Calendar.

fbCal is a free tool to get your events and friend’s birthdays in Apple iCal, Mozilla Sunbird, Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook or in your RSS reader.

This is a very easy-to-use tool that anyone can use and transfer Facebook birthdays and events to Google Calendar. You just have to allow fbCal for your Facebook accoun and get the import file for Google Calendar. Once you get it, upload it to Google Calendar and you will have all your Facebook birthdays and events in GCalendar.

Many of you really hate the new Facebook design and find it very annoying as you don’t get to keep up with the happenings in your friends profiles. If that’s the case, I’d suggest you go for Facebook Lite as default.

How to Use Facebook Lite as Default

Follow the steps below to get a clean Facebook user interface using Facebook Lite as default.

1. Login to Facebook Lite and go to Settings (wrench tool beside search box).

2. From the Settings page, go to Default Site.

3. Choose Facebook Lite from the two options and click Save.

You should now see Facebook Lite as your default Facebook.com page.

How to Switch to Old Facebook News Feed

Here’s a way to switch back to the old Facebook news feed. Follow the steps below to change it.

1. In Facebook, click on the ‘More’ link  in the left sidebar.

2. Now drag the Status Updates menu item to the top of the sidebar i.e above News feed.

3. Once moved, click on Status Updates menu item to save and refresh the page.

You will now have the old news feed back! Happy Facebook-ing!

The latest homepage features separate feeds for news feed and live feed. You can switch to whatever you find more appropriate for yourself. Even this design hasn’t been received well by the Facebook users.

I noticed that the new Facebook homepage sidebar now let’s you suggest profile pictures for people you ‘might’ know. Under Suggestions, it now shows options to write on friends’ walls who are not very active on Twitter.

To suggest a profile picture for someone, just click on the Suggest a Profile Picture link and it will take you to the person’s profile page and will prompt you to upload the new profile picture. Once uploaded, Facebook will send a request to the person whether it’s the correct/appropriate profile picture for him or not.

This feature still news to be matured, because for now, it shows suggestions for people who are not related to me in any way and don’t even have any mutual friends with me. But this is just new, and hopefully will get better.

Highlights section got a neutral response from everyone. Some liked it, but others found it as an addition to the ever growing clutter on the Facebook homepage.

If you don’t like that highlight section, you can use a userscript to delete that part out of the Facebook homepage. Unfortunately, Facebook being so much customizable, doesn’t allow to enable or disable Highlights, Suggestions or any other section of the homepage.

To remove Highlights, simply download the Hide Facebook Highlights greasemonkey script and install it in your browser (see below for your browser). It will remove highlights from your Facebook homepage.

But those were all Adobe AIR based applications. I’ve found another cool Facebook application that shows Facebook notifications on desktop.

Notifications is a small desktop application for Facebook that brings all your new notifications to your desktop. These notifications include friend requests, pokes, event updates, group invites and unread messages.

Whenever a new notification arrives, you get notified with a pop up window like in Windows Live Messenger. It’s a .NET based application, so Windows XP users will have to install that first.

Well, in Facebook, the profile page only shows a person’s date of birth (only if the user has allowed others to see). it doesn’t show you their age and yes, (for those who’re week in calculating) you have to calculate their age yourself, if you ever need to.

Today I came across this small Greasemonkey script that would replace the date of birth field in Facebook profile page with their age (like in the screenshot above). For all those lazy people, you won’t have to calculate the next time you find out how old your friend is.

This is an old trick, but you can easily find your Orkut friends on Facebook by following the steps below.

How to Find Orkut Friends on Facebook

1. Drag this Facebook bookmarklet to your browser’s bookmarks bar.
2. Now login to your Orkut account, and click the Facebook bookmarklet. If that doesn’t work, you can alternatively try opening this link.
3. The Friend Finder tool in Facebook will now looks for your Orkut contacts that are not in your Facebook friends list.

For such applications, Facebook introduces Prototypes, an application directory which brings all the usable product experiments built by Facebook engineers for everyone to try.

Facebook Prototypes

You can test any of the products and features launched by Facebook Prototypes and then provide feedback directly to those who built them. So far, the Prototypes directory shows only five applications, but more will be added soon. Applications available in Prototypes are:

• Desktop Notifications – For Mac OS X, Adds Notifications to your desktop, alerting you when interesting activity happens on Facebook.
• Similar Posts – Gives you an easy, one-click way to find similar posts right from your homepage.
• Enhanced Event Emails – Includes an iCal file as an attachment to your Event Invitation emails, enabling better integration with external calendaring solutions (Outlook, Google Calendar, etc).

Today, Facebook announced that now you could even login to your Facebook account using your username.

This new feature works from the web and mobile versions both. So now, web users get two options to login with (email and username) and mobile users have three options (email, mobile number and username) for logging into Facebook.

The email login is still there and won’t stop working as many users still haven’t got a username for their accounts.
