But a recent news was brought into the spotlight by CNET, in a Windows Vista Velocity program presentation, that it was confirmed by Doug Howe, Microsoft’s Director, that Microsoft is pressing for Windows 7 release in holiday season of 2009.

Although in PDC conference Microsoft  didn’t mention any such news about release windows 7, they did however mention about a beta release in early 2009 though. Well folks anyways its a good news that we will be getting our hands on windows 7 earlier than we all originally expected.

There are also widespread speculations that we might have many more CTP releases of windows 7 before holiday season of 2009 as Microsoft just released build 6801 and so far it has been pretty nice and stable release according to many reviewers.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for the upcoming release of windows 7 like other windows enthusiasts.

Windows Media Player 12 will have some really interesting new features. The experience is somewhat similar to WMP11, but you will notice that the UI is much brighter and lighter than the previous version. Some buttons and toolbar items have also been moved around.

Yesterday, they focused on unveiling their cloud OS called, Windows Azure. But today, they introduced Windows 7 along with its few features and UI screenshots that I have posted below.

Microsoft showed an early press-release version of Windows 7 to the developers. It looks more like Windows Vista. The first change I noticed was the new taskbar. It includes a thicker taskbar, improved system tray and no sidebar. Rest you can see in the screenshots below.

Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s chief software architect, dubbed this OS as Windows Azure (formerly known as Windows Cloud) at PDC yesterday. It looks like a mashup of Amazon EC2 type hosted services, Microsoft Online Services and other developer tools, including similar services that run on Windows Live.

The Azure Services Platform (Azure) is an internet-scale cloud services platform that is hosted from Micorsoft’s own data centers and provides a rich environment and a interoperable platform for developers to build new applications or make existing applications capable enough to support cloud OS.

Windows Azure can be used for:

• Add Web service capabilities to existing packaged applications.
• Build, modify, and distribute applications to the Web with minimal on-premises resources.
• Perform services (large-volume storage, batch processing, intense or large-volume computations, etc.) off premises.
• Create, test, debug, and distribute Web services quickly and inexpensively.
• Reduce costs of building and extending on-premises resources.
• Reduce the effort and costs of IT management.

Amazon and Google has already been into cloud-computing, and now Microsoft has also jumped into the bandwagon to provide large-scale hosting for web services and developers.

Azure looks promising and we hope to see our favourite applications on it, but only time will tell how far Windows Azure will go. For now, you can check out their website for more details and info on Azure and its services for Web and corporate developers.

These toaster computers won’t be able to toast bread for you, but at least they will provide you with the necessary entertainment you want. You can play games, run your favourite programs. This toaster computer consists of:

Ever experienced getting an error like “Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive” when trying to open a Zip-compressed file? If you regularly download compressed files off the Internet, then you must have seen this error many times.

This error comes when the compressed file is damaged or corrupted. I have tried repairing such archives with the built in WinZip repair tool, but that has never helped me. DiskInternals ZIP Repair helps repair zip structure and extract the contents of a damage or corrupted archive.

This is a new method and is being adopted and used by many, since it’s more easier, faster and portable way of installing Ubuntu on a computer. You only need a 1GB USB stick and Ubuntu already installed on a computer.

Requirements

You will have to make sure you meet the requirements to create the live USB stick of Ubuntu.

• Ubuntu 8.04 Destktop CD
• 1GB USB Stick (1GB, at least!)
• Internet connection
• “Boot from USB” option in the BIOS (on the computer where you want to install Ubuntu)

How To Create A Live USB Stick Of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

Let the tutorial begin!

1. Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources, click on the second tab (Third-Party Software), click the ‘Add’ button and paste the following line:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/probono/ubuntu hardy main

2. Click the ‘Add Source’ button and then click on the ‘Close’ button. It will ask if you want to reload the information about the available software.

3. Now, open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and paste the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install liveusb

4. When the installation is over, insert the USB Stick on your PC and the Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop CD on your CD/DVD-ROM drive.

5. Insert your USB stick and Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop CD.

6. Then go to System -> Administration -> Install Live USB.

7. Click on the “Options” link and then check the “Download and integrate Adobe Flash Player” box. Then click the ‘Execute’ button and you will be asked if you want to install Ubuntu on that USB disk and if you are sure that you want to erase all the data and partitions on it. If you are sure, click ‘Yes’ on both questions. The data will now start being copied and will take about 5-6 minutes for the whole process to get over.

Now you can remove the USB stick and enjoy installing Ubuntu on your friends’ computers or run and use it directly from the USB stick. It’s better to have a bootable live USB stick rather than having a bootable CD, since it’s smaller in size and easier to carry anywhere.

Windows XP SP3 apparently copies an Intel power management driver to the computer that was not there before the installation of SP3 and that is said to be the cause for the restart bug. But thanks to HP, a fix has been given for this bug.

The following fix can only be used if you use a non-Intel processor and encounter the restart bug after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3. Below are the fixes given by HP and Microsoft:

Remember: Make sure you make a quick backup of your system using System Restore. And also backup your Registry entries.

HP’s Fix For XP SP3 Restart Bug:

• Boot Computer in Safe Mode
• Use Windows Explorer to browse to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
• Right-click intelppm.sys and rename it to XXXintelppm.syx
• Restart Windows

If the computer is unable to boot into safe mode do the following:

• Press F8 during startup and load the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
• Type the number that corresponds to your Windows installation
• Log in as an administrator
• Type cd c:\windows\system32\drivers at the command prompt
• Type rename intelppm.sys XXXintelppm.syx
• Restart Windows

Microsoft’s Fix For XP SP3 Restart Bug:

• Boot the Computer into Safe Mode
• Press Windows R, type regedit, hit enter
• Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Intelppm
• right-click the Start entry in the right pane and select modify
• Enter 4 in the Value Data box
• Close regedit, restart the computer.

I hope this fixes your restart problem in Windows XP after installing to SP3.

WinZip and WInRAR are the most popular apps (applications) used for this purpose, but everyone can’t afford their license. Moving on back to the application, WinUpdatesList can run from any location on your drive. It neatly displays all the Windows updates (hotfixes, service packs, individual updates) in a table and shows information about the name of the update, its description, and the date that update has been installed. You can also find out that which user installed the updates.

A click on the updates opens a browser window with the Knowledgebase article of that specific update from Microsoft. Isn’t that sweet? :P

There’s a little compatibility issue. This useful, handy application works on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. On Windows 98/ME, some columns are not displayed, because the related information is not stored in the Registry as in Windows 2000/XP. And I feel sorry for Vista users, as this WinUpdatesList does not run on Vista.

Second Method

Well, the second method is by opening Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel in Windows. Simply check the Show Updates box, and all the installed updates will be listed in the list below. You can even uninstall any update from there.

Internet Explorer 8 looks promising this time, but Firefox is surely taking the lead, with Firefox 4 supporting Javascript 2 already into the pipeline, the future seems to be with Firefox!

Do you ever want to customize the “Open Dialog Box” of Windows XP ? Do you want to change its look and feel ? Do you find the navigation shortcuts useless. So here is a tutorial which will help you to customize the “Open Dialog Box” :cool:

In this tutorial I will basically tell how to customize the “Open Dialog Box’s” side icons through registry.You will also be provided basic information on how to change its other things also. :wink:

Before starting take a look at my open dialog box before modification:-

a>Click on start button.
b>Click on run.
c>Type regedit (Inbuilt registryeditor of windows)
d>Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies]
e> Create a new key called “ComDlg32″.
f>Select the key made and create a new key called “Placesbar”.
g>After creating the key all the icons in the open dialog box will disappear.

You will get the following look

h>In the key “placesbar” create a new string value called “Place0″ .
i>Edit it and type the path of the folder or drive u want.
j>U can have upto 5 icons in the open dialog box (i.e till place4)

After this you will get the following look:-

This trick also can be performed by using most of the tweaking utilities such as “Tune Up Utilities” ,”TweakUI” etc.

But If you dont want to do this trick with any utility then here is also a registry file to do perform this mod.

Create a new file with a .reg extension , put the data given below and save it.Right click and select “merge”.

A Windows service starts when Windows is booted and runs in the background as long as you are working on your PC.There are many services that run when you start your PC. With my experience with Windows and it’s tools, I have found out some of the services that can be disabled and your PC would still run fine.

First of all, you have to know the place from where you can view, enable/disable the services. Go to Start > Run and type msconfig. Now click on the Services tab. That’s it. You could now see a number of services.

Below is a list of services that can be disabled. Just see the service name from here and scroll down in the Services window, un-check the service and done!

Remember: If you use any of the following services, then don’t disable that one. It would cause your application (or whatever it is) to stop working.
Disable the following services:

• Alerter
• Application Management
• Clipbook
• Fast UserSwitching
• Indexing Service
• Messenger
• Net Logon
• NetMeeting
• QOS RSVP
• Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
• Remote Registry
• Routing & Remote Access
• SSDP Discovery Service
• Universal Plug and Play Device Host
• Web Client

Some service names may vary. I’m again telling you, do it at your own risk. If at anytime after disabling them, you find that your applications are not behaving as they should be, then enable them back. And make sure you always make a backup of your Windows settings before trying these tweaks and tricks.

VLC Player

Also known as Video Lan Player is a must-have for every computer-geek just like having Harry Potter’s seventh book for a Harry Potter fan. It plays every thing you can imagine. As far as I remember, I have never had any compatibility problems with this player. You can say “It plays almost anything you throw at him“. I would recommend you to download this and try it out. It supports file formats such as MPEG, MOV, AVI, ASF, WMx, OGG, WAV, 3GP (this is just the start) and more. And one more thing, it’s skinnable just like other good applications. Download the best skins from here. The default is just like giving you a heart-attack, so get the skins now!

KMPlayer

KMPlayer is a free movie and audio player that supports a wide range of codecs and file formats, it has full DVD playback functionality. Tons of built in features like video and audio filters, subtitle, zoom, pan & scan, open streaming media, play from TV card, camera etc. It seems to be a combination of VLC Player, BS Player and Windows Media Player.

GOM Player

A very nice player, except that it does not come bundled with all the codecs. They are a few included, but still you’ll need some like FLV4. Even their playlist displaying is not good. Instead of showing the track/artist name, it shows the actual location of the file in the PC. Some of the main features of GOM Player are given below.

• Built-in codec finder
• Plays broken AVI files
• Supports subtitles
• Supports a number of formats
• Screen Capture

Winamp

Now if you are a music-lover and want a nice treat for playing them or managing your files, then get Winamp. This is a player that will fulfil your music playing needs. It has one of the best media library, and the sound quality is at the top! You can even more enhance it with DFX Audio Enhancer.

I wanted to include BS Player, but the recent versions come with adware in it. It was among the best players like KM Player, VLC Player but this adware is made it to go down :( .

Method 1

Right-click anywhere on your desktop and make a new shortcut by navigating to New > Shortcut. Now in the location text box, type “shutdown -s -t 3600” (without the quotes).

NOTE: 3600 is the number of seconds after which the computer shuts down.

• For PC to shut down after 30 minutes, use 1800
• For PC to shut down after 1 hour, use 3600
• For PC to shut down after 1 hour 30 minutes, use 5400
• For PC to shut down after 2 hour, use 7200

I’m sure, you can count the rest :P .

So moving on to the next step, type a name for the shortcut and you are done! You can choose a nice icon for the shortcut you just made later on.

Method 2

Now if you don’t want a shortcut on your desktop, then alternatively, you can use this.

Go to Start > Run and type “at 22:23 shutdown -s” (without the quotes).

And later on, if you plan not to shutdown your PC at the specified time, then again open Run and type “shutdown -a” (without the quotes).

NOTE: Times used in this method should be in 24hr format.

Method 3

You can also use a batch file to shut down your PC at a specified time. Just copy the code below into your Notepad and save it as shutdown.bat anywhere in your PC.

Recently, my Windows got infected by a powerful virus and all my C:\ data was wiped out :( . Even my Firefox bookmarks, settings, saved password etc. were deleted. The reason for all that loss was that I didn’t had any backup. I’m just too lazy to do that. ;) But now, I have learned a lesson that backups are very important.

So here I have come up with two ways by which you can backup your Firefox.

First I’ll tell the easy way

Download the MozBackup and use that to backup your Firefox.

Now for the advanced way.

Okay, people who don’t want to use any third-party applications can use this way.

First make a new directory anywhere in your PC (where you want to store the backup). Here we will use the drive G:\ and the folder ffbackup as the backup directory.

Then go to: C:\Documents and Settings\<user account>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

There you will see a folder (or more, if you have more than one profile), and it will be named something like b47db.default. b47db is some code behind every username. It’s some sort of a code, and it differs everywhere.

Open that folder and copy all the contents of that folder in to the backup folder (ffbackup) we made in drive G:\. That’s it! You have just backed up your Firefox profile data including general settings, bookmarks, emails, history, cookies, cache, saved passwords, saved formed details etc.

How to restore the backup?

Now whenever you want to restore the backup, simply copy everything from the G:\ffbackup folder, and paste it in your Firefox profile folder :) .
