Sorry but I think most linux users have bad taste. Most IT people (the majority of linux users I guess) aren’t designers and don’t have any design skills. I wish I had them.

Some of those images show the skins on KDE and some are shown on Gnome, it would be helpful if you could either stick to one desktop environment, or make sure to note compatibility.

Ok…I’ve downloaded Roy and Bamboo Zen. Am guessing that they need to be extracted to a specific location–which location? Are both compatible with Ubuntu 8.04/Gnome? After extracting them, will I just look in System | Preferences | Appearance | Theme and see them or is there something else I need to do to use them? Thanks for any assistance.

one of the best ways to improve the look of linux is to add some custom icons. you can add them the same way you add themes. also some mouse themes can be nice too, but as someone mentioned before linux people don’t seem to have the best taste, so you might have to sort through some crappy stuff to find the good ones

Well it would be more interesting if I had a clue how to make the theme work - it’s not a theme package to be handled by ‘install’ in the Appearance appelet, and it doesn’t show up if I copy it to the ‘.themes’ folder… so what should be done with it?

It’s nice to see you showing that gnome can look great as a desktop environment but please remember that gnome is not only for ubuntu. It is a standard on many distros and can be set up for most linux and unix machines and customized to no end. This seems more like a gnome article than an Ubuntu one. Nice themes though!
