VLC Player for iPhoneThe trend of open-source applications being ported for other devices seems to be growing. The most recent is the port of VLC media player for iPhone and iPod Touch. VLC is an open source cross-platform media player that plays just about everything you can feed it. Develeper Zodttd, has dubbed it as VLC4iPhone and it will work on jail broken iPhones only. I think this is going to be one popular application at the Apple Store (launching this Monday).

Note: VLC4iPhone is currently in semi-private Beta testing. You can join in the Beta if you donate to the cause.

With VLC4iPhone, you can drag and drop MPEG/MPG, AVI and MP3 files on your iPhone or iPod touch. He is also in the process of researching playback for VCD, DivX, WMA, and WMV, and he notes that FLAC and OGG are coming soon.

This is still in beta but a public release will be out soon. So stay tuned!
