Movie Downloads Coming Soon To PlayStation 3

As part of Sony’s long-range plans for its newest gaming console, the PlayStation 3 will be getting a movie-download service as well as additional music and HDTV capabilities.

The PlayStation platform continues to evolve both in software and firmware revisions, noted Phil Harrison, president of Sony’s worldwide studios, in an interview with gaming publication 1UP. Even during the heyday of the earlier console, the PS2, Sony noted that the platform would be destined for more than gaming.

The inclusion of a hard drive in the PS3 is part of a larger strategy to boost the PlayStation’s presence as an entertainment hardware device, rather than just a game machine. Harrison noted that, in the future, it is possible that the PS3’s hard drive capacity will be increased to take advantage of digital downloads and offer more storage options. The 10-year plan, he added, includes not only games but also other forms of content, such as movies and TV shows.

Although he did not state when the download service might be available, Harrison noted in the interview with 1UP that the PS3 has a hard drive and e-commerce capabilities, and that it “doesn’t take a rocket scientist” to figure out that the two will come together soon.

Xbox

360 Showdown

In creating a movie and music download service, Sony will be putting itself in competition most directly with Microsoft, which launched a similar service last November. Called Xbox Live Video Marketplace, the Microsoft download service allows Xbox 360 Premium owners to buy movies and TV shows.

The strategy was applauded by some analysts, with a report from research firm Emerging Media Dynamics estimating that the service would generate up to $92 million for Microsoft in 2007, and possibly up to $762 million by 2011.

Creating more demand for the PS3 could help to soften Sony’s losses as well. Some analysts have estimated that Sony is losing money on every PS3 sold, as consumers buy more Xbox and Wii consoles.

Google is going for Adscape

GOOGLE has agreed to acquire in-game advertising company Adscape Media for $US23 million ($29 million), according to technology site Red Herring, which cited sources familiar with the matter.

A Google spokesman declined to comment, saying the company’s policy is not to respond to “rumour or speculation”. Video game industry analysts said the acquisition could give a boost to the nascent in-game advertising market.Adscape competes with advertising start-ups Double Fusion and IGA Worldwide, which have already signed deals with major publishers.

It also has a rival in Microsoft, which last year paid $US200 million for in-game ad company Massive Inc - lured by Massive’s agreements to place ads in online games from UbiSoft Entertainment, THQ and Take-Two Interactive Software.

“My take on this probable deal is that it doesn’t make a lot of difference to Google but it does provide significant credibility to the game marketing space,” Forrester Research analyst Shar Van Boskirk said.

An Adscape spokeswoman previously said that the company struck deals with video game publishers, but that for strategic reasons it was not revealing names or commenting on the Google acquisition speculation. A company representative was not immediately available for comment.

While Adscape is seeking deals with virtually all major publishers, its value is expected to be based largely on its team and its technology that places dynamic ads on billboards, or vending machines that appear in video games. Adscape, which has received funding from HIG Ventures in Atlanta, is poised to be the big winner if a deal is struck because Google built its multi-billion-dollar web search advertising business with a huge roster of large and small marketers and now has a large, experienced ad sales staff.

Vacuum Shoes - Clean As You Stroll

Image
Eat your heart out, Dyson Electrolux has done one better than your “properly” working vacuum cleaner with these floor-cleaning shoes. Just slip ‘em on when it’s time to clean the house and they’ll suck up dirt from the floor as you shimmy from room to room. I can see neat freaks wearing them all day, owning several pairs for family members and guests.

Sadly for them, the vacuum-shoe future is a bit of a ways off, as this sucking footwear is just a concept right now. Still, we’re all for this rockin’ idea, assuming Electrolux sorts out the requisite issues regarding power and how the dirt is stored (hollow heels?). And that mint-green look has just got to go.

SMS Technology M300: The cell-phone watch arrives!

Image

Though it may seem a little too much like a one of those calculator watches for some, SMS Technology Australia’s upcoming M300 watch promises to be a mobile phone on your wrist. I4U News reports it’ll see the light of day in late March for around $500.

The M300 watch should be able to work with any GSM network. It also supports Bluetooth so you can sync up a wireless headset, has a built-in MP3 player, can be connected to a computer through a USB port, has a speakerphone, and sports a 1-inch color screen. Nice features all, but we think it would be great if it could also let us view television or show us time by stacking rectangles.
